Depending on what it is.

On my motor mounts I went from 80 Grit to about 800 or 1000 grit.

Oil Filter Cover and Starter cover- I just used some Fine Steal Wool and then polished it.

It all depends on how big the pits are in the metal and how rough it it.

On most things its best to start with about a 220 grit and go 220,400,600,800,1000,1500,,,,,,,,thats what you want to do to get it as close to perfect as possible.
DO NOT use a 80 grit on anything aluminum, the stock motor mounts are OK to use it because they are steel but still just a little to course even for those, aluminum is a LOT softer than steel and it will scratch it too deep!. On the things like the calipers and the brake rezzies with the deeper pits in them you could use a 120 grit,,,I used my Dremel with 120 grit sanding bands which made it real easy, but dont operate the Dremel at 35,000RPM when doing it,,,go about half speed and take your time and it will get all the pits out, then use the sanding steps and polish it up!!!

I just used a wire brush fitting on my drill and than sanded with 220 than 400. After that everything polished right out as long as you have a good polisher.

My dads friend made this wheel out of steel wool. It polishes awesome.

sounds like a good idea, you domt use any finishing compounds, or mothers after you're done?
