08 450xc chat

Well after taking a break from all riding in general i'm going to get back into riding. I used to race mx A class up untill this year and just got bored with spending all my money and beating my body. So anyway i'm looking to get a quad thats a good all around machine. I'm going to be doing 50% trail riding and 50% track ( just practice track playing around) I work at a dealer that has Hon, Suz, Yam, Kaw, and KTM so I get to piss around will all the 450's. Right now i'm leaning towards an 08 KTM450xc. I really like the idea of just throwing nerfs and a stabilizer on it and ride.
I haven't been following the forums in a while and want to know the low down on them. They seem pretty solid overall but I want to do some research before getting one. So any info possible would be great. And if I should wait and get an 09?
Also what about the price? I can get an 08 450xc otd for $7643. Thats paying PA sales tax.

Also, I forgot to ask about basic maintenance. Oil/filter changes, valve adjustments, etc...?

I would just buy an 08. The 09's have a significant price increase. The little things that they changed for 09 can be fixed on an 08. Maintnance isn't bad. Change the oil, clean the air filter and watch the valve adjustments.

How is doing a valve adjustment on a KTM motor vs. honda or suzuki?

Adjustable rockers .. very simple
Oil changes ... a little more of a pain .. it has 2 filters you have to replace , and 2 screens in the bottom end to clean every oil change.

well i have gone thru 4 motors this year on my 08. i would reccomend not getting one

My engine is my outlaw has held up fine and i've been riding it for a year, my friends outlaw 525 also held up good(engine), and a kid I know with the 525 xc has had no problems with his engine that I know of, just problems with his exhaust leaking and water in the swing arm.

I have been mx racing my 525 all summer and practicing on it almost everyday and have not had anything major happen to it that was not caused by a crash. Make sure the air filter stays clean and is seated all the way around because these things breath alot of air. Handlebars are extremely strong. Retightened a few bolts with locktite, lost a lower chain slide once. No motor or chassis issues. has held up really well to a 250lb local pro-am racer. I would highly reccommend this machine.

I race mine xc and we have had alot of mud this year, motor has been hot many times no issues with it. Change oil after every race, clean air filter between practice and race tighten a few bolts and ready to go. I haven't had any problems with mine that I haven't caused myself. I think you couldn't go wrong w/ KTM.

$8450 otd for me. You should be able to get one for less though if its an 08.

I got him down to the same price as you but the taxes brought it to about $8243 otd. On the floor it was marked at like $9300. I'm picking it up on Tues or Wed depending on my work schedule at my second job. Can't wait though! You should definately get one (especially with the price increases coming up for the 09's). Maybe I'll see you at a Cross Country race if you decide to race yours.

Ya I know, the 09 is 10,700 retail I think. I work there so I can get mine alittle over dealer cost. If I didn't have to pay tax it would be around 7200 but oh well.
