Howdy, was wondering what the gains would be with a 11:1 compression piston, stage 1 hotcams and a 400ex carb. Horsepower wise and overall performance wise. Is there anyway to keep up with the 400's??

I know i could get a 400. But when someone asks you what you ride and you tell them a 300 and then then can at least keep up or do stuff that they can't do on a 400 is what im looking for. I know it doesn't make much sense but thats what im after. Still wondering about the gains?

not sure about the numbers, but those upgrades with a pipe and filter would easily stay with a 400. pass, no. but you'll have no problem staying with them.

Ok, I know you know this, but it depends on a lot of other things. What kind of race? Drag, nope. MX , yep. My younger brother is on a 300. Trust me when I say it is 60 percent rider, 25 percent suspension, and 15 percent motor. My brother is a very smart and aggressive rider. We bought a new 300 and put a 50 inch front and rear end with long travel shocks all around. The motor is 100 percent stock other than the standard pipe, filter, cdi mods. On a small to medium size track, he has beat many 400's and even 450's by outriding them, rider, and out jumping them, suspension. Now granted, any where with real long straights he gets out hp'ed.

If you want to drag race, get a bigger bike. If you like your bike and race mx, suspensions and riders win races.

Just my 2 cents with lots of experience behind it.

Disagree somewhat.. he made no mention of head/port work.
I would agree that it may keep up with a bone stock 400ex straight off the factory floor with no modifications whatsoever. That is in the 0-50 range. The 400ex of course will always have a higher top end capability simply due to a higher rpm limit.

Machine vs machine.. with no accounting for rider factor.....

A modified 300ex will generally keep up with a "stock" 400ex. A bigbore/port & polish/etc.. 300 will keep up with a pipe & filtered 400ex. Add a cam or an ignition advance key to the 400ex and it's game over for the 300ex.

The 400ex has better geometry, and has slightly better engine technology.

Dollar for dollar spent a 300ex will never keep up with a 400ex.

I hear ya on the top end, 300's never were known for the top speed more for low and mid-range capabilities. I mostly trail ride but when we hit the dirt roads i at least want to keep up and pull a wheely in 4th and shift to 5th.

My buddy is a Harley mechanic and wants to port and polish my head, he hasn't done it very much, any tips, how bad could he screw it up and so on? Would it be worth the risk? Keep in mind that he's working on $25,000 and up Harleys...
