Black smoke

i have a 01 trx 400ex mods are in sig and when i start it up and rev it it smokes black i know blue smoke is oil but i do not know what black smoke is.........i have a 42 pilot and a 170 main in a stock carb air box lid off has anyone had this happen to them or know what is wrong

Sounds like you're too rich.

Your main jet sounds awfully high for a stock 400ex without an airbox lid. Try a 155 or around there. And adjusting the needle.

i have te 440 kit and stage 2 hotcam with a full exhaust.....

You can get compression testers at auto stores. You screw it in where the spark plug goes, and hold the starter button while also pushing the throttle all the way. It will get to a point where the compression gauge stops rising, and thats your compression.

I dont know how many psi a 11.1 piston should run.
