Yeah it was a cool race, upperman rode really well! natalie got 5th i believe with creamer and brown right in there too. lawson had quad issues and putted around the track. poor dunk was in last the whole time. the new polaris looks a lot better, but it seemed to be handling rough, and also sounded like it wouldnt rev out, (or he wasnt trying to rev it out)
Bubba rode the perfect season, and won by a mile both times.

hey outacontrol do you know what happened to russell shumaker as to why he didn't race today?

Congrats Chad! When I was down at Jeremiah's house before Loretta's, Chad was training like an animal there. I'm glad to see that he's recovered from his injuries and will have a ton of momentum heading into next season. I'm also happy to see a local up there and doing well too, awesome ride Uppy!

i dont know why shumaker wasnt in the lineup. The atv guys were running the same lap times as 3rd place in the 450 motocross class. Pretty impressive. Last yr at the open a lot of the fans showed little interest in the atv's, this yr barely anyone left after the mx 2nd moto. Wimmer put on a good show too, coming from a bad start up to 2nd. Pat brown also had a horrible start and was back in the pack, and fought his way up to a 6th or 7th i believe.

That really sucks for dunk. Are you serious he got lapped? Was he on a bone stock polaris out there?

if i remember correctly the last kawi spot went to joe haavisto because they are downsizing their ama team to 2 riders again for 09 and i have a feelin shumaker is gonna be the sacrifice

What a great event, but I am exhausted from climbing hills the last two days, but I have the practice photo galleries up from Friday, and I am uploading the ATV Main Gallery now, but it will not be done till morning because of slow internet.

As for Dunk, he just got the Polaris a few days ago, so he didn't have much seat time before the race, which is tough, but I wouldn't knock him or Polaris.

As for Shumaker, he hurt his wrist during practice, and decided not to race in the Main.

Chad Wienen has been on fire since Red Bud, and he was a dominate force this weekend, so if he stays healthy next year, it should be real interesting.

I am staying at Steel City for Sunday's Racing, so when I return home, I will release the race report and all the photo galleries of the Quads and Bikes.

Hey, I don't want to retype the whole thing, so I just lifted this from my posts over on the 3 wheeler forums..forgive me for sounding way excited, but you younger guys have no idea how exciting this was for us "old" guys having the opportunity for the Trikes to be seen on a national stage after sooo many years of being unfairly outcast (kinda like how the MX bike riders look towards QUADS).. At the end, I'll toss a couple pics I managed to get with my crappy cell phone cam.

"Only thing I can say is WOW!!!!!!!
Jimmy White is one awesome guy. As down to earth as anyone you would meet out on the trail or MX track. I got there later than I had wanted because things have been so busy I just flat out forgot about this weekends racing. Anyway, got there, Mark and Brian were already setup in the "Show Area" with the Trikes. There were a bunch of really cool old race bikes there as well. After a bit of discussion and a couple calls, me and my buddy Rick unloaded my T4 and fired it up...rode it right thru the specators and up vendor row straight up to the Pro Pits They waved me on thru and I rolled it right up to Team Green's Race rig. (got a pic for the proof! ) It was awesome. Ok, then here we are sitting there, not knowing what to do next, people coming up to the bike, checkin it out asking if it was the one he was gonna ride, to which I had to tell them unfortuneately it wasn't. I explained it was Mark's 3 Wheeler that would be his mount. I had no idea where those guys had parked, so after talking to a couple of Team Green's Mechanics, I left my t4 there with the Race Trailer and walked down to where they thought the others would be. We found them and then headed back up to the Pits with Mark bringing the T3 for Jimmy. Got there, Jimmy got his helmet and fired the beast up. He took it for a little spin up in the field/parking area behind the Pits. When he got back...looking VERY shaky, he promptly told Mark "No way I am gonna take this beast out on that track!" He called it "*****in" like 5 times, but said he was too scared to take it out. He didn't want to look like a fool or crash in front of 1000s of spectators! He then said "Mark, YOU take it out and rip it up!" NO WAY!!!! Mark was hesitant at first thinkin he would not be allowed, but Jimmy assured him it would be fine. The grin on Mark's face had to be SEEN to be believed! I'm not sure if it was me or Mark told him to take MY T4 out and he thought it over for a few minutes, but declined it as well. I was almost ready to piss myself. Anyway, Mark geared up and he and Jimmy headed down to the Gate to line up with all the Legends on their Old School MX bikes. Please don't ask me if this racer or that racer was there....I Have NO IDEA..I was just going nutz for Mark to be getting this once in a lifetime chance. (if you really must know, just watch it on Speed Channel as they were there taping it! :P Well, there Mark is, Jimmy at the Gate with all the other guys and the Announcer starts giving the details on each of the Racers and as he does, one by one they take off. He gets to the T3 and gives the best warm up I heard, tellin basically THIS is what gave birth to today's modern ATV racing and with out these awesome 3 wheelers, there would be no ATV Racing today! AWESOME!!!! WOW!! As he is talking the Trikes up and specifically the T3 Mark takes off! WooHoo!!! The crowd is cheering Mark's ripping off the gate on a Vintage Race Trike at a 2008 MX National RACE!!! How cool is that? VERY FREAKIN' COOL! me and Rick were in the crowd and the spectators were all making positive comments on the Trikes and NOT once did I hear ANYTHING about them being OUTLAWED, or "them dangerous things"! It was one of if not THE coolest things I have ever watched. (I'm sorry if this is getting so long, but I'm busting inside right now!!! ) Ok, back to Mark on the track.....he was just toolin around, throwing it sideways in the turns and hitting some of the jumps fairly easy as he hasn't seen the track layout or had any time on it until then. The other MX bikes were doing the same ripping around, pulling some wheelies, jumpin some of the smaller, easy jumps and puttin on a nice show for the crowd. Mark came around to a drop-off jump (basically a 5-6 foot dirt ramp with NO downside) and wasn't sure about it. He rolled the front tire to the edge of the ramp, went a wee bit too far before realizing he couldn't jump it OR roll it. The front tire dropped off, then MARK decided to just JUMP OFF THE TRIKE!!!! He did, it dropped off the ledge and rolled! The crowd went NUTZ! Mark, biffin it was the greatest thing they had seen all day! It was kinda on purpose as he had no other choice! It was great! I hope I am not stealing his thunder telling this story, but I guess HE is the one who got the EXPERIENCE it, so it should be fine! After righted the T3, he fired it back up and took off again. He got to take another lap or two and then back to the starting gate for some high fives and fist bumps with the other Pros and Jimmy White. Amazing to watch and a memory I'm sure Mark will cherish the rest of his life. Whew! Mark brought his T3 back to the show area and lined it back up with the rest of the machines on display then hung out and chatted with lots of spectators about his bike. Lots of people asked about my T4 and tons of people checked out Rob and Tammy's Trikes. There were people all over Brian's T3 all day as well. Jimmy white told us to make sure to stop back up before we left and that he wanted to give us some shirts (very cool). He gave me, Mark and Rick a tour of their Team Kawasaki Race Trailer, let us check everything out up close and personal, answered all kinds of questions and was very cool to just hang out with us. He even remembered my name...Mark's too! Way cool! I got him to autograph my T4 fender (planned on a new one soon anyway, and this one can just hang around on my garage wall w00t ) It was a great day. In my rush, I forgot my camera...yes...can't believe it..I did. Rick had his and I saw him snapping pics, but not sure when I'll be able to get them from him to post up. Well, I'm gonna go see if I can find some pics on some other sites yet. I'm sure there will be some of Mark and our machines.....OH SH1T, almost forgot...hey, Wes Miller of H-Bomb Films said he may come over to Smith Road Monday to film YOU GUYS RACING!!!! No, I'm NOT KIDDING. We talked to him for a while too. Tammy, he loved your R, sat on it for a bit and chatted with us. Said he used to race one! More c00lness!!!!! Ahhhh, I gotta stop... later!

I got to talk to Jimmy White after the races and they were kinda disappointed with the results. Creamer was nearly dead last right after the start. I asked what happened and he said he was sooo excited at the 30sec sign, he heated his clutch soo bad and had a bad start. Watchin him run once things got settled in, he was on a mission. He reeled in the whole field and got back to 6th by the final lap. His lap times were the fastest of anyone out there, but ran outta time. Couple more laps and he woulda got by Natalie for 5th..no doubts. The QUADs were so impressive out there. Them boys can fly. The Pro MX was kinda boring to watch due to the fact after about 6 turns, it was the Bubba Show and nobody was even close. I got tied up BS'n in the pits and at the Vintage Bike show area and didn't get to see the women race, but from what I could hear and what was being talked about...THAT was the race to see. I guess the chix were battling like mad and laying down some serious laptimes as well. Can't wait to see some better pics from other areas of the track. Later.

Dunk got invited to run the race from his season efforts on his Honda ride. Too bad (for we Dunk and Honda fans) that wasn't his only option for this race. I guess now he knows he has his work cut out for him if he runs a Polaris next season.

Yeah it would have been nice to see dunk do better, but his polaris was no where near stock, i did notice he was running fox shocks, i didnt want to pay $20 to get into pro pits just to see the quads. I think he will have his hands full with his new ride. Watchin the polaris over the whoops compared to the other quads, you would have thought it was stock. Props to him for racing a quad a few days after getting it, but it still sucked to watch him so far behind...

I hope know your crash from drinking monster wore off & you come to your senses on what you post. If you were watching the race Dunk was lapped by Weinen while dunk was waiting at the finish line, so he didn"t have to ride another lap on that Polaris, & followed Weinen across.
As to saying Dunk needs to STEP it up?? Compared to what. Should he drink more monster drinks?? If you ever watched a race you would see that he hasn't faded back because of not being in shape, BUT QUAD problems all the time. When his quad did stay together see were he finished?? Top 5's even a Podium.

I know i would like to see maybe a FACTORY team Step it up & maybe give him a chance. If you took notice he still beat 3 factory Can Ams in that race.

i disagree with this
not saying dunk should have done better
just in general i dont think this is true for the elite racers
most of them can jump to a new bike and get up to speed rather quickly.
what place do you think bubba would have come in if he were on a honda or yamaha.
first because he is a better rider by far

wrong bikes are alot easier to get used to than a whole completly different quad. have u ever rode someone elses quad and you really cant ride it fast or just plain hate it. Its the exact same thing.

u cant just hope on a different quad and go out in win.

how does it jump . how does it corner. wheres the power at, hows the seat height, everything is gona be different than what your originally used too.

Chad rode a suzuki for the first time 2 weeks before the first WPSA , he was in 2nd and had a dnf.. He won 2 out of the 3 after that..

Props to polaris for stepping it up with good riders. the bikes look way better than the only predators.

agreed bikes are probably easier to get used to
but ive had this on going situation with parts and quads
ive got a yfz stock motor and i pull heavily modded motors out
of the turns does this mean id be even faster with the mods?
i dont think so, think i dont spin as much or suspension for that matter which ones the best axis, elka, fox. my point is there all good enough to get the job done.
this is not nascar racing. mx is more rider less machine than any other racing. more lines to choose from, diff braking points, the
way you get over jumps and rythm sections its much more than just circling the track on your super fast quad
have seen spader on a stock raptor700 a few years ago at e-town keep up with pat brown on his race quad.

Youy use Wienen as an example That is good, Privateer going on a Factory based Quad, with all the top notch mechanics who have been dialing in the zukis for 1 complete year. Polaris new quad new setups new mechanic & engine builder. Did you see the polaris come out of the hole shot?? Slow look like no bottom end, also running Douglas tires when your used to something else all adds up. Do you think Dunk is that slow?? Started off hitting Every jump then rolling everything last laps. Doesnt help there was no oil in engine when they got back to trailer.

I'm alright now Kev and I was standing at the finish line so thats kinda what I was talking about and yes he stoped cause he would of got run over if he didn't. Give him some time on the polaris and he might get a little better. Let me guess you were on of the guys that were in blue shirts that siad dunk 19 on the back? also near the finish line?

any update on Mitch reynolds broken arm?

JenniferRath
08-31-2008, 05:59 PM
Yes we had our work cut out for us with bikes two weeks old and building them into race bikes. Going to the line against teams that have years..yes years done in development!!

We are proud of the new bikes and the riders- Mitch setting 10th fastest qualifier on the new Outlaw and Dunk 12th- Mitch was actually running 6-7 qualifing times until his misfortunate accident that left him with a broken arm. Surgery went great and he will be back swinging in 8-10 weeks. So he missed the main event. we heard more then once this weekend that Little Mitchy looked better and FASTER this weekend then he did all year on his Honda :)

Dunk worked hard trying to ride a bike he was on a total of about 6 hours before he raced it. The man deserves respect for that. We faced a mechanical in the main- but he did not give up or quit. Congrats to him.

Weinen ...well lets just take hats off and salute him. He was moving!!

Josh Upperman- Congrats!!

Up to speed rather quickly? Yeah, Dunk was hitting EVERYTHING out there. Tripling the Tundra jump, hittin the pro Double, doing the up hill jump, he was hitting it all. The track was rough. It had 6 moto's on it plus practice before the quads got out there. The quad was beating the crap out of Dunk, he had his hands full, the quad was jumping all over on him. The power just wasn't there either. So please don't act like Dunk isn't an elite racer and anyone else would have done better with what he had.

No disrespect to Rath racing, but if Polaris wants to debute a quad at a huge event....then they better be more prepared than that. I was really expecting Dunk to be up bangin bars with Natalie and finishing in the 5th spot.

They should have given you alot more than just two weeks to be competitive in a Pro Atv Invatational race. Like Ken said, no one is running over to their local Polaris shop tomorrow and buying one/getting on the list. :ermm:

yes they are good enough to get the job done when u have time spent riding and practicing with them. u said u have a yfz correct. so this meanin u think u can just hop on say a cannondale or kawi or ltr and be just as fast. probally, but it would take some time getting used too.

i am not bashing just stating the truth.

I would agree with atvracer9m...a switch had to be hard for Dunk. Super glad he got a chance to race the event and proud he competed no matter where he finished!! I am also stoked to see Polaris there and showing its commitment to the sport.

As far as preparing the new machine....I dont know if the new machine has been pushed as hard as Dunk can push it, I am certain there are issues that probably showed themselves that noone could really prepare for. As stated earlier, Weinen's switch to the LTR had him on a machine that for the most part was sorted out.

Congrats to all the racers, and a get well soon to those that were injured! The galleries are posted on the homepage....

im not gonna get into polaris bashing, its good for our sport that polaris is into mx racing, just think 5 short yrs ago, how many "factory" teams were at the races? Our options to race were 400exs, the new LTZ, or build your own Laeger for 20k. We should be thankful for what we have. Now to say that you cant take a "new" quad that no one has seen, let alone ridden and podium on it, is well...false. Kory Ellis, Highpoint national 2003. Debuted the YFZ and got a podium, against full blown walsh hybrids etc.
Dunk is one of my favorite riders, and i hope for his sake he can figure out the bike and have better success than all the dnf's he had this yr on his honda.

What does having the team bike figured out have to do with getting use to it? He finished the race right?

Getting use to the controls, how it feels, getting that f*** it factor you had on your last bike is what makes the difference...

Not trying to bash dunk at all, hes a incredible racer, but he has had alot of bad luck this year...

On a more positive side, I thought the new polaris look, looked 10x better than the previous models.. Dunks was sharp looking in my mind.

Cool Pics and clip.

Did anyone happen to get some pics of any of the Legend Racers? I rushed out of the house and forgot my cam and didn't get any good pics. I am specifically looking for pics of my buddy Mark on the Tecate 3 or any pics of the vintage bikes lined up in the spectators area. Anyone? Crossin my fingers!
