what year tranny for mx

what is the best year tranny to use for mx . right now im using a atc250r 85

I believe the 88-89's have the lower geared 5th and 6th gears.I was told Honda did this at the riders request because they complained the 86-87 engine seemed to sag in 5th and 6th on mx tracks.

yep what he said, but really I dont see getting in 5th or 6th that much on a MX track.... :D

We have a straight away or 2 at our local track that i get 5th easy on.I imagine the really fast guys that rode the national tracks could pin 5th in alot spots on the bigger tracks.

Actually the difference isn't that great especially for 5th gear. I also believe that the 87 has the same gearing as the 88-89.
Here are the differences is ratio between the 86 and forward:
5th 0.004
6th 0.032


Also, the reduction in gearing between the 38 rear sprocket (88-89) and the 39 rear sprocket (86-87) makes the 88-89 a higher geared setup. If you have trouble noticing a difference in 1 tooth, you're not going to notice the trans change.
