hello all, im finally at the point where im ready to do something about my 450r shocks. im running 05 shocks on +2 burgard a arms, and i found a set of works triple rate springs on ebay for $229+shipping. ive heard that simply respringing the shocks solves the harshness of the shocks. any input on this? also, they ask for weight, a arm length and the type of riding you do. do i need to include that they're being used on a 400ex? can anybody tell me if this is worth the money? thanks in advance.. im trying to order these so they can be delivered before im home for the weekend

have you tried tuning the 450r fronts to your settings? I dont find the 450r shocks harsh at all. I kept adjusting them and playing with the preload, compression, and rebound until I found what works best for what i'm doing. They feel very plush compared to stock 400ex shocks. 08400ex i think had that kit and said it was a huge improvement.

They're amazing when landing big jumps and when riding really hard, but they are still horrible on low speed bumps. So I'm looking into triple rates for this exact problem.

08-27-2008, 07:35 PM
mine dont seem to have that problem in low speed. What tire pressure are you running in the fronts?

Preload is all the way out and compression is all the way soft. the rebound is slowed down a couple turns, and I'm running about 4 1/2 to 5 1/2 psi. I've tried all the adjustments and they're still too harsh on slow trails.

08-27-2008, 07:47 PM
what about running the rebound all the way slow so they are softer feeling?

ive tried that too, but then they just bind up in whoops or stutter bumps, and it doesn't really help on the initial shock. i know im going to buy springs, im just hoping somebody can answer my questions...

anybody else?

last weekend i saw a guy with the 450r triple rate rebuilds but they used TCS compents. he said he loved them. he races XC and the shocks absorb most whoops and potholes found on that type of track. he rode some mx, but he said if he was to flat land pretty bad the shocks would bottom out. but so will the $1000 buck elkas. he said overall it was definatly worth the money.
oh and they were on a 450r btw. i assume it will be the same for the 4hundy

thanks! thats what im looking for. while my brother and i hit some decent jumps every once in a while (him more than me), we mostly do all different speeds trail riding. the slow stuff is just torture after riding for 8 hours in a day. after riding on my brothers elka rec series, im seriously jealous. its like a cloud. im gonna give works a call tomorrow and see what they have to say.

well i called up works today and to say the least, the friendliness left a little to be desired. first, i was linked to an "engineer" that could help me.. turns out i just got his voicemail and i asked him to call back. 3 hours later, no call. so i called back and talked to the next guy who yelled at me for using 450r shocks on a 400ex  . oh well, after a little bit of talking, he actually seemed pretty nice and took care of my requests. i ended up with a 600, 600, 250 setup i believe, in red, black, and a black main spring. hopefully my problem is solved! we'll see. thanks for the help everybody.

Have you talked to Colby about the problem? I'm sure he could rework something.

i would have loved to, but i just don't have the money for a full rebuild at this point. someday i'll do it all right.

Foxhonda, what year 450r shocks do you have?

They are almost all different in the different year 450r's. Supposedly 2004 is the softest of them all. That was one of the complaints from people when it came out, compared to the yfz at the time the 450r shocks were too soft. In 05 they hardened em up some.

i heard you can take all the preload off the spring but that is only going to help so much. the 450r spring is a single rate, at high speed they feel great but low speed roots ect they are ridged. i was looking for some cheap dual rate springs also. i tried some yfz450 springs in my 450r shocks and they feel great. i got them off here for $40 shipped. they are very plush at low speed and work great at high speed. here is a pic. i posted this before hoping someone else would try it. i cant believe im the only one on the planet running this setup !!

as far as i know 2004 and 2005 were the same and then 2006 they made them stiffer and made them lighter by switching to aluminum preload collars i believe and it cut off like a pound. I have 2005, I purposly got them because they are softer than the 2006 and up.

yep thats it. instead of getting them off of ebay i called them directly and ended up arguing about why i have 450r shocks on a 400.. and then i called two more times wondering where the heck they were. the second conversation went like this:

Me: "hi, i'd like to know why my order is taking 3 weeks to get here"
works: "well, the parts had a delay in production"
Me: "then how can your ebay store say you have 14 kits available. I'd like a tracking number"
works: "ok, do you need the kit soon?"
Me: "yes, actually i need them this weekend, and i never thought it would take this long"
works: "ok, well you can upgrade to 3 day shipping for $7 extra"
me: "no, YOU can upgrade to 3 day shipping for $7 extra"
works: "sorry but thats not our policy"
Me: "are you serious? what would the total be for 3 day?"
works: "about 29 dollars"
Me: "how is it 29 when you said only 7 dollars extra?"
works: "regular is $22"
me: "why is it only $16 on your ebay store?"
works: "uhh.... ok it'll be about 23"
me: "just send it ground, this will be the last time i do business with you"

they could have redeemed themselves by sending a bunch of stickers, but i only got one. and i love stickers.

came home earlier than expected!! my quads front finally "flexes." before, it would probably be three wheeling if set up on boards like this. now i just need to dial them in a little bit and hopefully get some time on them soon. :D

well, while riding today i noticed that they are much more forgiving over the little bumps, but its almost like the top spring is too soft. i know i need more preload, and i probably need to raise compression to almost all the way hard. the problem now is "stiction"... friction caused by the a arms bushings sticking. anybody know a remedy for this? without shocks, the a arms are almost hard to move up and down, even after fresh grease. also, the rebound is turned all the way fast, but when the shocks compress, its almost like they stay like that. will just adding more preload help this? or will it just smash down the top springs? thanks for any advice.
