View Full Version : Does My 450 Kick Over Like Normal?

Well, I just converted my ER over to a kickstart. I am wondering if this is normal...... If the engine is coming up on compression stroke, it takes my whole weight jumping on the lever to finnaly get it to turn over. ( I am 200lbs.) I can get it to fire on this stroke but it is difficult because it take soooo much effort just to get it to turn over. If it's not on the compression stroke I can get it to fire every single time. I was just wondering if this is normal ( I am assuming it is )? I have never kicked over another 450 before. Thanks!

sounds normal to me. every now and again mine seems to be harder than other times. i just use the hot start and it seems to help.

I don't think the ER's have the compression release mechanism that the kickers have, cause my R kicks over easy with my left foot only comming off the peg for a second and I am 127lbs.

I would say that is correct.

You can buy one and install it.

What is different about them!!??!

It is a mechinism that bolts on the cam. At were low RPMs it throws out an arm that holds one of the valve slightly open to relieve the compression. When it starts and the RPMs are increased it doesn't come out.

I understand fully how the decompression mechanism works. I am just wondering what is different about the 04-05 vs the 06 and up? thanks

Different about what?

The 06+ still have a decompressor. But it may be very important to get the clearence set on the decompressor for it to start correctly with the kick start now.

Yep - the decompressor should be right side exhaust clearance + .006". If it's out of spec, it will be harder to kick.

even with my hot start lever pushed in mine is hard to get going sometimes, just depends on where the piston is i guess.

mine is a walk in the park to start, something is wrong!

I turn on the gas, flip the throttle one time, turn on the choke, hit the button with my thumb, baddow, she`s alive....:D

Oh, you said kick start, sorry.....:D

Like I said, If I slowly kick it until it comes up on the compression stroke and then try to kick it, It take all my weight jumping on it to get it to crank over, but if it isn't on the compression stroke or I kick thrue it over halfway down, I can start it while sitting down. Is there something wrong or am I just paranoid? thanks

get it to the compression stroke, then get it half way down. then give it a good push down. i'm so used to doing it that way its like second nature. starts first kick every single time.

Do you have to just stand on the lever and let it drop?
