If it was real loose any rode like that very long it can be hard on the bearings. Or the bearings going bad could be why it come lose. tighten it up and then check the play in your rear axle. It shouldnt have any. And remember that the locknut it left hand thread.

The lock nut is NOT left hand threads.

then what is left hand thread?? im pretty sure out of 4 450Rs and 3 400exs all mine were left hand thread???

Nope 450Rs and 250Rs are right handed threads. I can't answer the 300EX question. I never had one.
Remember righty tighty, lefty loosey. That's how right handed threads work. Think about it.

they are right handed threads, and put some electrical tape around the nut once you tighten it, that should keep it tight.

being a atv tech. I know for a fact that the 400ex 300ex and the 450rs all ARE LEFT HAND THREAD.. ...blacknblue#2 is correct because when you tighten your axle you are removing the nut(or taking it outward) toward the clip.... the way I tell people to remeber is if your standing behind the quad take the wrench up to tighten and down to loosen it!!

well i tightened up my locknut and there is still a little play in the axle but only onthe right side of the swingarm (if your standing behind the quad)...does this mean that i have shot my barings on the right side?...or do you think it would be the whole carrier?

If its just a little play then i would say your bearings need replaced and your carrier is fine. If you can grab the axle and jerk it around in there then the carrier would prolly be chewed up too. But from you saying it has just a little play i would say buy i bearing kit and your good to go.
