Does 450 Cam Chain work on 400ex? I have problems

I have a 400ex and am having problems with my bike (ticking). Valves have been adjusted time and time again. Everything looks fine. Except the chain feels loose when grabbing it on the top of the motor. The tensioner is maxed out. My sliders look good, sprockets look fine. But I'm running a 450 chain.

its been a really long time since I've ridden or posted. I want to get this thing going again. Is there anything that says this isn't a good idea, or is everyone having the 450 chains work fine.

well I guess I'll take it apart and start counting the links. I don't want to spend money on a stock 400 chain, when I have a new 450 chain on it. But I don't know what else it could be. everything else looks fine but tensioner is all the way out and chain has slack on the cam gear.
