Sweet what color your painting everything?

trx400EXtreme
08-21-2008, 07:11 PM
looks good. very clean, as always. are you planning on changing the plastics to a different color?

Honda#4
08-22-2008, 07:38 AM
IDK how much you know bout my other painting thread but the color is gonna be Blue Metalic just like my arms and hubs, no i'm not gonna change the plastics maybe in a few years I might buy a set of Laker Custom plastics but for now the stocks will do, I plan on shaving the fenders in 09.

Here's the color just to bring it back

mooseracerX
08-22-2008, 07:54 AM
I was wondering if you were going to use that color. Actually I like that color and yellow. So are you going to get a hood too or just cut them?

Honda#4
08-22-2008, 08:31 AM
I'm just gonna cut my stocks for now but probably get a CF hood for when I get new plastics.

I got one more prime coat then its off to the paint stage and I should get all that done today hopefully, then I gotta repaint my heat shield also stupid gas.

mooseracerX
08-22-2008, 08:57 AM
Make sure to photo-ho it up once you get it done. :)

Honda#4
08-22-2008, 10:39 AM
O I will, I think it will make your jaw drop alittle after seeing my swinger in metalic blue.

Honda#4

08-22-2008, 12:27 PM
:eek2: :eek2:  Awesome, I can't wait to see all that stuff together on the quad.
BTW that swinger looks light approx. weight?

Honda#4
08-22-2008, 12:41 PM
Actually is somewhat heavy I think 13lbs maybe more 15ish IDK never weighed it. Everyone is gettin pissy that im painting in the basement cuz the fumes but it doent bother me, nothin I can do cuz you cant paint in wind and we dont have a garage to hang stuff.

mooseracerX
08-22-2008, 12:48 PM
Yeah my Houser seems really heavy compared to the stock one. But at least they won't break like that. I know what you mean. Always seems to be windy on the day that you want to paint stuff. haha

Honda#4
08-22-2008, 01:16 PM
Yea mine excels in every aspect yea its pricey but I believe quality and performance comes with a price.

lilyamaharacer4
08-22-2008, 01:25 PM
That things looking pretty sexy, but i would be afraid of taking that thing out and scrathing anything.

Honda#4
08-22-2008, 01:35 PM
My paint jobs hold up quite well, my arms have been painted now for 4 months and not one statch on them, I've taken them through a alfalfa field to see if the paint would rub off but it didnt.

Yippie-Ki-Yay
08-22-2008, 03:03 PM
(just my opinion) I dont think you should shave you fenders, ive always loved the look of this bike with fenders, and since so many people do it its a refreshing change of pace having fenders. But its up to you. :)

brian76708
08-22-2008, 05:24 PM
what kind of pain are you useing

mooseracerX
08-22-2008, 05:31 PM
He's using Rustolem or however you spell it. ;)

Honda#4
08-22-2008, 09:30 PM
Yea I'm using Rustoleum paint, IDK if I will shavem or not I do like the look of the full but I think its alittle sleeker withem cut but if I go and buy new plastics laker custom has there own cut so either way i'll be happy.

Note: Painting may take alittle longer due to my folks complaining about the paint fumes.

Honda#4
08-23-2008, 02:11 PM
Update: On second coat of paint, and I redid my heatshield so everything should be done by tomorrow+ one day of drydown painting wise, as for putting back together it should all be done by Wednesday.

Honda#4
08-23-2008, 07:46 PM
Clearcoat is going on tomorrow. She sure is lookin insane!

mooseracerX
08-23-2008, 07:49 PM
Sweet I'm sure this is going to look awesome.

Honda#4
08-23-2008, 09:44 PM
I'm praying that I got a good shot at qotm, if I dont win then I dont have a clue on what else to do with the quad unless I bring out the second list I have in my notebook.

mooseracerX
08-24-2008, 07:16 AM
You should do pretty well. I'm thinking of entering mine after the winter rebuild.

Honda#4
08-24-2008, 09:53 AM
I'm hoping Andy (fontmaster) will have another 400ex qotm again like in past months. I've been waiting for a good year to enter mine and hopefully i'll be ready for the next one.

justin1022
08-24-2008, 12:54 PM
hey that is some good painting! you remeber mine? well its all chpped under my a-arms and the from bottoms cuz of racing when i bottom out my frame scrapes for some reason and the front is chipped because my freind i was racing on my track acsodently unloaded on me ha. ha my swinger held up though. what did you use to paint a can or a brush gun?

Honda#4
08-24-2008, 05:31 PM
I dont remember you offhand, i've had great success with my lower arms paint is holding up great still looks brand new. I use a rattle can for all my painting needs. Remember that paint only lasts as good as it was preped, point is if you dont prep it dont expect the paint to hold up.

Clearcoat is all done, now its all drying i'll probably start putting everything together on Tuesday maybe Wednesday.

Honda#4
08-25-2008, 12:18 PM
Got my sticker ordered so that should be here in a few days, later tonight i'll unhang everything and take pics of the final products.

Honda#4
08-25-2008, 06:38 PM
Well here's the finished pics but the swinger is a suprise cuz I dont have the sticker yet. I think it turned out great sorry bout the pics though they turned out dark, i'll take better ones when there on the quad.

Pipeless416
08-25-2008, 07:55 PM
looks cool. just don't expect the sprocket to last long.. if you don't mind me asking, why are you so set on winning qotm?

Honda#4
08-25-2008, 08:39 PM
I feel I put alot of time and effort and money into getting my quad the way it looks today and i'd like a shot at winning is all, I know its not the best but its the one last thing I have to accomplish in my quad life before I set my goals higher and would have to sell my machine.

Honda#4
08-26-2008, 07:11 PM
Well finally the pics you been waiting for, i'll take better ones tomorrow it got kinda late.

Sweet I'm really liking that color combo. I'm sure it will look really trick once you get the Roll sticker.

Honda#4
08-26-2008, 07:50 PM
Thanks man, it looks flows so much better I think. I'm shocked just looking at it, atleast its got a two color combo now.

BTW try and guess how much the sticker is?

mooseracerX
08-26-2008, 07:54 PM
Your welcome. And I do think if you decide to cut the fenders you should cut the lower part to make them look like the Maier regular fenders.
IDK $30?

Honda#4
08-26-2008, 08:21 PM
Not that much $5 lol, there that much though directly through Roll Design. I was quoted $20 just for the front stickers from them but I gottem for nothing.

When I get the chance to cutem I will but for now they have to remain full for the time being.

mooseracerX
08-26-2008, 08:26 PM
Oh, well I was thinking Roll Design that stuff has to be a lot.

Honda#4
08-26-2008, 08:38 PM
For 2 castle nuts and the nylon washers that go on each end of the arms it was $30, so yea the parts are what kill ya its over a 100 for the bottom balljoints alone. Price doesnt bother me cuz I know have the quality and customer care that back me up.

mooseracerX
08-26-2008, 08:41 PM
Yeah I know what you mean, if I was building a national quad with no budget I'd for sure use Roll.

Honda#4
08-26-2008, 09:02 PM
Yea there good but if I could use another suspension company i'd shoot for Gibson or JD Racing and for shocks i'd go for Stadium.

mooseracerX
08-26-2008, 09:07 PM
I'm thinking maybe LSR DC-4. And either Axis airs or PEP pb1. :eek2:

Honda#4
08-26-2008, 09:24 PM
Yep LSR is another one I'd try but idk if I could decide on the airs or the pb-1's both are wonderful shocks.

lookes nice man!!:D
Ive been painting some random things black lately(bumper, heat sheild, chain gard). im going to have to do my hubs, and motor monunts now soon to. ive been using a random high heat black paint, with primer and clear, and its held up well.

Honda#4
08-27-2008, 06:36 AM
Thanks Justin and speedy, speedy if you do end up doing the hubs just sand them alittle cuz blasting them off takes forever. When you get done with everything I'd like to see it.

Speedy 400ex
08-27-2008, 01:12 PM
Ya i wasent planing on doing alot of prep. just some sanding and alot of primer. im going to do them this weekend if i can get the paint. i think i might do the nerfs to.

Honda#4
08-27-2008, 01:26 PM
Sounds good I cant wait to see it.

Speedy 400ex
08-30-2008, 11:39 AM
question what size is the the bolt that holds the rear hubs on?? a 1in is the biggest i have

Honda#4
08-30-2008, 11:56 AM
You mean the axle nuts right? either a 27mm or 1 1/8 works fine

Note: Stickers are coming Wednesday

Speedy 400ex
08-30-2008, 12:15 PM
ya those thanks

Speedy 400ex
08-30-2008, 09:58 PM
Well i got all the stuff painted but its to dark for pics and nothing is mounted yet. i dident end up painting the hubs cus i dont have the tool to get them off so i ll save thos for later.

Honda#4
08-30-2008, 10:58 PM
You dont need a tool to get the hubs off unless for some reason there really stuck on, I had one that I had to use my gear puller to get off but then I lubed the spindles up with antiseize and its all good.

How did everything turn out?

Speedy 400ex
08-30-2008, 11:36 PM
well i had it in gear and all with anti seize, I even added a pipe to the end of the wrench to the point where i was turning the motor over lol. Every thing elese turned out ok.

Honda#4
08-31-2008, 07:58 AM
Wow! they must be on there, I never had problems with my rear hubs if anything the nuts are always loose, have you tried blaster and wd-40 and such?

Ruby Soho
08-31-2008, 08:02 AM

Speedy 400ex
08-31-2008, 02:45 PM

Speedy 400ex
08-31-2008, 10:38 PM
thanks:D . ya some time ill get those done. all just have to have my buddy bring his air tools over.:D

lilyamaharacer4
09-01-2008, 11:29 AM
I think you should get a set of the air scoops and paint em the blue like you did everything else, it just seems to me as if the front end needs a little more blue and i think that thatll do it.

Honda#4
09-01-2008, 12:30 PM
I have air scoops I could paint them up as well I guess, never really thought of that.

01-09-2009, 08:34 PM
What are you priming with. Rusto too?

Honda#4
01-10-2009, 05:50 AM
It's a blue bottle from Walmart I dont know the brand off hand but usually all primer is the same so it dont matter what you buy.

rcatvrider
01-10-2009, 08:52 AM
Does regular spray paint actually stay on the heat shield?

Honda#4
01-10-2009, 03:27 PM
Yep no problems. The shield itself doesnt get entirely that hot so most paint sticks without peeling off.

I'd part out before selling pretty much. I want to much to sell it out right and with todays prices it's not worth to sell it.

Plus it's really not officially done so I plan to keep it.

im still looking for a bone stock 400ex in northern wi if anyone knows someone selling.

had to bump!! awsome thread :D im in the process now exept im using auto paint in a gun and no body around me can sand blast so im using air craft remover but it is still not real smooth what did you do to prep your parts?

Honda#4
11-02-2011, 06:20 PM
Everything except the swingarm is blasted, for that I used 220 grit sandpaper to break open the PC coating. aircraft stripper is some messy stuff and be sure to use some gloves when messing with it is my tip. Using a gun is the way to go, if I had one I would have done the same but it wasn't to bad.

01boneless
11-02-2011, 06:53 PM
wish i could get it blasted but i cant find anyone i spripped it the best i could but there is still little splats of paint here and there im just gonna do a few good coats of primer to even it out :D would you like me to post pics when im done ? im doing frame a arms sub frame hubs. i already blacked out valve cover ewater pump cover thrometerstat cover motor plugs oil filter cap cam chain tetioner and the letters that say honds and clutch cable arms lol 450r btw :D

Honda#4
11-02-2011, 06:58 PM
Yea sure post away, On my hubs i had a few spots of paint but that was okay. As long as you rough up the surface the paint will stick but its always a good rule of thumb to get to bare metal.

Oh and my hubs took over 200lbs of sand alone just to give you a figure, that paint is a pain to get off believe me...

CJM
11-02-2011, 07:34 PM
Wire wheel in grinder. Sandblasters worth it but a real pain.

01boneless
11-02-2011, 07:42 PM
^^^ lol i have been doing that for hours somone spray painted it and its a bi*** to get off  im just gonna rough it up after i get some more off prime it 2 times and giver 2 good coats of paint and a coat of clear :chinese:

Honda#4
11-02-2011, 07:50 PM
Make sure that when you sand or do anything that you clean the part with alcohol to get rid of any residue or dust on the part.

Wire wheels wont stand a chance on the hubs.

CJM
11-02-2011, 07:53 PM
Need the wire wheel with all the knurls in it you put on an angle grinder. Ive used it to clean stuff like you wouldnt believe. But sandblasting or preferably bead blastings better.

01boneless
11-02-2011, 08:00 PM
my hubs are not painted just bare metal lol the parts im removing paint is all spray paint

11-03-2011, 09:24 AM
Looks good, I have yellow plastic and have thought of going blue too. I have had a couple Suzuki 250r's and liked the yellow blue combo.

cheater13
11-03-2011, 12:17 PM
Instead of doing all this stuff, i might just ship some parts off to get powdercoated for my 400 :D I was thinkin of starting with the hubs powdercoated blue? What looks good with a yellow and black 400? The Powermadd handguards are even yellow and black on mine.

Honda#4
11-03-2011, 04:10 PM
Being that mine is yellow and blue I think the only thing I'd do black is the wheels. I've photoshoped different colors with yellow plastics I felt that blue was I way I wanted to go.

I think it's harder to try and flow a 3 color combo quad than just with 2 colors which I think you should try and stick with if you can, but thats up to you.

duneslider
11-03-2011, 04:51 PM
Personally, I think you could do some black too. You already have some black plastic.

Blue hubs with black wheels would look very good.

What was the blue rustoleum you used? Just blue metallic? My local lowest and home depot don't have a blue metallic.

I may try some duplicolor blue metallic.
