Loaned my 86 quadsport 230 to a buddy today, he threw a rod. It has a hole in the head and a hole int he top of the crankcase, no idea if the internals are ok tho.

Had been noticing it leaking some oil due to some missing crank case bolts and I think its been burning it b/c it was blowing blue smoke the last time it was out. I know I added oil to it about 3 weeks ago, we only rode maybe 6 hours total on it after that and it had been getting low often. Stupid me forgot to add oil before I let him borrow it today.

So, what will fit in the frame and work with the least amount of trouble besides the stock engine? suzuki 250R, 160, honda 250, blaster, banshee?? I dont think I can use a suzuki utility quad motor b/c this is a chain driven model afaik.

So yea, anyone know what fits, I need to get it back up and running for my brother whom I promised it too.

So uh yea, no one knows? I figured a 250R would fit, but someone who knows better may say otherwise..

In 1989-90 Suzuki had a 250 QuadSport. You could check ebay or ATV salvage yards like east coats atv for that engine if you don't want to get another 230. Should bolt right in. Maybe need different mounts...

On another note... Not trying to be a dik... Why would you keep riding your quad when you knew it was missing crankcase cover bolts? I would say you've learned an expensive lesson here... replace missing bolts, especially when engine oil is leaking out! ;)

It actually wasnt leaking to badly out of those bolts, they are the side covers to the crankcase, I cant replace the bolts b/c they are all fubared up.

Doesnt matter since I got a workable 230 motor. Now to make 1 motor out of 2 and make sure everything is sealed tight.

Thanks..

Im thinking to seal up the one outer case cover that will leak I will take some lead and or solder and braze it then seal with jb weld or something.

Your buddy over-revved it. Quadsports are known rod chunkers when over-revved. The 250's are actually worse than the 230's!

Over revved or not dude, it was seriously low on oil and we all kept forgetting about it since it was my back up quad.

Yeah, the low oil compounded the already flawed design. Some Quadrunners from the era are actually chain drive. But, they have pull start and auto clutch. And some are shaft drive. I've never figured out why they offered them that way. You should be able to find one of those.

I did fine one, its like half an engine as it needs a piston. Right now its half apart and the other is whole. I would do it myself but I aint that good, im waiting for a friend to help me. Hopefully it runs when were done.

Shame is i paid about 200 for the engine and i see a decent shape 86 for sale by me for 500. I coulda just had 1 and 1/2 quads.

would anyone know why my 1985 230 quadsport gets hung up in gear after a rebuild?

There's only 2 things that will cause that. Something in the trans not assembled correctly, or a bent shift fork.
