View Full Version : what motors might work in a 250R frame?

I could get my hands on enough parts to build a 250R. Enough stuff is available to almost if not complete a rolling chasis.
But.... no motor.

I have seen plenty of 250R motor parts for sale and I am sure I could put one together if I wanted to.

But..... Just wondering what other motors may work in an 86' frame. With out major mods doing it. I would not mind making mounts and such, but I would not want to cut up the frame to make something work.

I was thinking of something like maybe a later model CR250 motor or maybe even a big bore 4-stroke.

Just brain storming the idea of it. What do you guys think?

i have seen CRF450 engines fit in there with not much fabrication. I have an 85 atc 250r motor for sale for a good price if your interested and plenty of other stuff also. The link should be in my sig, just copy and paste

You should just build yourself a nice 250r motor and not mess with the frame. just curious but what would be the point of putting a cr 250 motor in it?

I heard 250R engines fit, make plenty of power, can be fast relatively cheap and sound like sex.

This is true. I can confirm the sexiness.

A friend tried using a 98 CR250 motor a few years back. It didn't work out so well. The un-counterbalanced engine kept destroying motor mounts. It then got to the point where the beefed up motor mounts weren't breaking, but the frame was instead. He tried rubber isolators and everything. Not something I'd suggest.

I'll be going back to my hometown this weekend and will take pics of the neighbors recent CRF450 swap into an 89 TRX250R frame.

It was jut a thought about using something besides a 250R motor. I was just thinking of maybe a later model motor since original 250R motors seem to be getting a little harder to come by, just from what I have seen.

If the CR250 motor did not work out well, then I guess a CR500 motor would be out of the question. That was my next thought for a motor for it.

If I were going to put a 450R motor in it, then I think I would just go find a used or blown 450R and rebuild that.

How about an old XR600 motor or XR650 motor in that frame. Or would that just be to big and heavy for the machine?

I know the best thing would just be to build a 250R motor for it. Just looking for other ideas if I even decide to build this machine back up. Time and money, but mainly time, will limit this project.

you might try reading through the hybrid forum on here ;)

I think if I get it, I will probably just stick with building a 250R motor for it. Take my time and do it up nice. Set it to be a good woods machine. What do you guys think about building it up to be a good wood weapon? Anything special I would need to do for to set it up for woods?

i'm sure the 400ex motor will fit and the xr650 i have seen it done aswell.

Just got rid of a 400EX not to long ago so putting that in there does not excite me. But an XR650 motor, not that sounds like fun.

If I get it, I think I will take my time with it and just build a good 250R motor for it. Take my time and try to do her up nice. With the lack of time I have right now, I would just have to bag her up and store it for now anyway. That would give me tons of time to keep an eye out for motors and parts.

I think I am going to try and get it. I think it would make a really fun and cool project. I have had project machines before, but there is just something about the 250R that draws me to it.
