putting video on an mp3 player

i bought a sony walkman mp3 player with video capabilities over the weekend...i have a few videos saved on the 'puter i would like to put on the player for viewing...where can i find a good FREE program to convert the files to the MPEG4 format?

i said free because i don't necessarily need to put any videos on it...but it has that capability so i feel i won't be getting my moneys worth if i never use that feature...

id like to also find one. i like putting songs on my phone (MPEG4) and most of the songs on my cpu are mp3.
