How do you adjust valves??

Hi,I am wondering if anyone could tell me how to adjust the valves on my quad..I know that there is intake and exhaust valves and I have all the tools,I think its a micromoter? to see what size shim you would need..but I am tired of bringing my quad to the mechanic to get it done and want to learn myself! :(
