im goin from a 440 kit dont know if it has hd studs or not...down to a 416 for more reliability...i was wondering if i should put hd studs in it or not....and do we think a stage 2 cam will work well with it also....was thinking of goin with a curtis sparks full system also...and a heavy duty cam chain

Yeah a 11:1 416 with stage 2 cam will work great. The stock studs will work fine with that unless the threads in the aluminum are already stressed. The sparks pipe is great. Ive had the x-4 and now have a x-6. The x-4 will give you all around with more low to mid range power. The x-6 will give you more mid to top and its also stainless so it will always look good.

you wont need a hd cam chain in the 416. dunno about the studs tho. i beat the **** outta my 416 and its still runnin strong for the last 3 years but dont ride it much anymore got a 450 now.

I say a HD cam chain and HD studs are a must for any build. They are both fairly cheap for the insurance they provide. Also, don't forget to replace that cam chain tensioner if you haven't recently replaced it.

agreed with gojk, do it, even if its not 100% needed, you mine aswell have the insurance that it will be a reliable engine.

A stock 400ex needs a HD cam chain. Just make sure to get the CRF450 chain and dont overpay for an HD one that is more than likely just a rebadged CRF450 chain anyways.

If you have the funds to do so, do the studs, if not, you'll probably be OK on just an 11:1 build.

Yes, proper fuel selection is key to keep heat down. Heat is the #1 enemy and what causes the head studs to pull.

you can go 120 over on a stocker to a 426, but it is not recommended because the cylinder walls become very thin.

I would say every 2 years or so. I tried to go longer and it bit me.

Mine came apart completely after about 4 years. And it wasn't pretty when it came apart.

mine has been the same since my quad was made. My brothers is too. How can you tell if they are going? the tick or something dont they? you hear a chain slap?

I am sure you can tell by feeling slack in the chain, but I would just replace it if there is any question. It is $35 or so.

could you tell by twisting the screw in it? like you twist it with a screw driver and it wants to push back to where it was

It won't push back because it has a ratcheting system internally. So once it clicks forward it won't move back without turning the screw.
