Would a YFZ 450 be a good woods quad? Or should i look into a raptor 250 or 350(Don't want a 700)?

I have a TRX450, the 450s are amazing in woods trails. I ride in the rockies in Colorado. The 450s have enough power to get you through anything (within reality) and when the time comes you have plenty of top end. The 250 or the 350 would be just as good in the tight stuff but I think you would be disappointed with the top speed on the smaller machines.

i have a yfz and love it the center of gravity is low so when im on tipsy trails its more stable and its very nimble the power is amazing just a little low to the ground

heres how I see it
-trx 450 starts like s**t (good with kicker)
-ltr 450 to wide, to snappy of throttle
-kawi seat is hard as a brick but reverse is nice
-yfz in the middle all good
-raptor 350 not enough power

Now this what I have noticed at local harescramble races. Are you planning on racing woods?

No i don't plan on woods racing just long rides through them.

We've had this discussion, not everyones starts like crap. Mine starts up everytime no problems, no more than a second on the start button. There are just as many people who don't have the problem as people that do.

Why not the raptor 700? There perfect for long rides IMO the 450's are good for one thing and that is to race.

are u staying away from the 700 cuz it sounds like too much power? cuz the yfz has a much more unforgiving powerband its alot snappier.

I would wait or go for a 660 raptor.

I'd go for a 660 raptor if you want to learn how to be a mechanic.

The yfz would be a fine in the trails. I think the raptor 250 would be a sweet trail machine. Lightweight and nimble; supposed to be fairly peppy as well.

The only thing the YFZ could improve for trail riding is the suspension.... Its a little on the stiff side. But, I've spent some time playing around with the shock adjustments, and seems to be very good now.

The YFZ's like to be ridden up top. If you wanna just lug the quad around in low rpm all day long.... I'd go with something else.

X 2 - My bike has no issue starting, tap the button and fire it up. When someone who does not know what they are doing tries to start it, the pump the gas and flood it every time, I really think that a lot of guys that say they`re R wont start are flipping the throttle and may not have the patience to stay off the gas?

I know what you mean, it says right on the throttle assembly, leave throttle closed during starting. Everyone tries and pump the gas while hitting the button. At most one or two pumps before I hit the button.

No one ever had starting problems with their YFZ's??? I know I did when I first got mine.

Best modification I ever did to my YFZ was the Accelerator plate on the Carb. Fixed my slow starting problem, and stopped that TERRIBLE bog when you stab the throttle.

Nope thats why I've got the holeshot in every harescramble race I've done.

I am happy with the performance of my YFZ in the woods when comparing to my 400ex... Few things I would change - the notorious throttle dead spot which is a hassle sometimes in the woods...keeping the RPM's above the flat spot seems to work but begins to be a bit of work, and also it would be real convenient to have reverse....maybe I am too old and lazy :D

when i go on long trail rides i make up for this dead spot with more clutch work and i dont mind that

The Accelerator Plate will fix that flat spot. I reccomend anyone running a stock carb on their YFZ to do this mod.
