Going to look at a 400 tomorrow, guy only wants $500 for it. Can you guys tell me some of the common things to break on these? He says it needs two new hubs and maybe a new axle. It's a 04 if I remember right. He told me that it's got 426 bore kit with a cam, not sure of brand names. This will be my first one so I don't want it to nickle and dime me to death.
Anything helps.

for $500 i would buy it. Even if the frame needed to be fixed i would gusset powdercoat it, if the a-arms, axle, hubs were bad replace them, the motor gone bad depending whats wrong a new motor is like $800 on ebay or for a barely used motor. Heck for $500 its worth it in parts.

Only thing that really conserns me.. he said that there is some issues with wireing. I've owned a little Jr. Dragster ( if anyone knows what that is) sence I was 8. I can do all the axle, hubs, ect. But that wireing sort of scares me. If worse comes to worse I guess I could just throw it on ebay for $500 and get my money back out of it.

if the wiring is bad i have a then i will sell you one cheap i have a complete harness. i also have hubs

buy it even if it needs work. also if you need chassis parts i have a 400ex and a half chassis wise.

as for things breaking on the 400s the answer is nothing :macho that is if maintained within reason.

umm..I would get the VIN and have that checked..seems a little wierd for only 500 bucks for an 04..even if there is a little wrong with it

where is the vin located?
Also, I might have to take you guys up on those parts, still havn't seen it but im sure its not going to be in the best of shape...

I wasn't lieing to you guys. Guy just dropped it off tonight.
Here's what he told me.
400 bored 40 over
Jet kit
Some kinda LOUD pipe, the baffles are plates that you slide into the muffler. Its got 5 of the 15 you can put in.
Needs new axle and others but it runs now.

You should put like 5 more discs in the muffler and rejet. The amount you have in now barely flows better than stock.

Ok I'm still learning about this ATV stuff. He said he's got all the disks.. I need to rejet after i put more plates in?

WOW! 500 bones, I'd love to have a junky EX or any decent quad to just WOOP THE FUZUCK OUT OF! or, you could spend some time and make that pretty nice... Keep an eye on here for good deals on parts and maybe terrible ebay and you could make that thing REALLY nice for another $500 bucks!

well if i was you, i would strip the entire thing down to the frame. and check out just about every last little part. clean everything and put it back together replacing whats needed. it looks pretty beat IMO, but for 500$ its not bad.

then if he says its 40 over, id either go in the engine and find out whats really in there or call him for receipts.

Today I'm going to start to strip it apart. Start painting stuff, make it look decent for this weekend. We are going out of town for racing, and this is my ride to get around the pits, when I'm not in the car..
