my buddy has a 450r and last night we drove 2 hours away to go camping and riding the next day, well about an hour and a half of riding his quad shut off... he waited a second got back on and it wouldnt turn over at all, so four hour drive for nothing pretty much anyway got back home and tried rolling it and pulling it to try to get it to turn over, still nothing... it has a high compression piston in it any ideas whats wrong

Drain the oil and pull the filter and see what type of metal you have in there, If the piston was replaced could also be a wrist pin failure.

there's a crap ton of metal shavings in the oil filter

Pro rider is dead on, either crank or crank bearings.

The shaving are probably silver?

What happens is the right side crank bearing goes bad and the crank walks over to the right side and as it turns it shaves down the right case. That is where the metal is coming from. Make sure you get the updated crank, part # 13090-HP1-315. It comes with the right side bearing, seal and a collar that is supposed to fix the problem.

I just went through that. Luckily I change my oil everytime I ride so I caught it early and I did have catastophic failure like you did.

I would suggest to anyone that has an 04/05, if you don't change the oil every time you ride, to at least pull out the oil filter and inspect it for metal after every ride.

how much do you think hes looking to spend if he does it his self or if he takes it in? thanks for the post that helps us understand whats going on a lot more

More than likely you need
crank
main bearings (one comes with the crank)
cylinder
piston & rings
gaskets & seals
cam if it is scored
maybe a valve job

I would guestimate $900 to $1400 doing the labor yourself.

When I did mine I put a
CP 12:1 piston $185
02 CRF cam $177
Crank $219
gaskets & seals $150
vavles & valve job $350
mics stuff oil engine ice ect ect

Hopefully you didn't damage the cases. They are like $225 each.

I spent about $1200 without having to buy a cylinder.

Good call!! I totally forgot about that. I replaced mine too. You can't flush it out, it needs to be replaced.
