hey guys i need a new gas cap by this coming weekend and i cant seem to find any billet caps for the 86 and 87 250R's. I found that MaxBillet makes them... but im not about to spend $60 for one when theres tons of other companies that make and sell them for $25-40. So if anyone could point me in the right direction i would appreciate it. Oh, and i bought the Tusk billet cap from RockyMountainATV and they kept trying to tell me that theres no difference between the 86/87 caps and 88/89 caps, yet it wouldnt fit mine at all on my stock 86 tank. It fit my 400EX though.

or if someone wants to get rid of a 3.6 or 4 gallon tank, let me know =)

you can use the 88-89 cap but you need 2 rubber gaskets that goes under the cap

I'm running a Tusk billet cap from an LTZ/KFX 400 on my 86/87 tank.

are you sure a banshee or LTZ400 will fit? theyre both different part numbers. and i thought the LTZ400 fits a 400EX. if thats true, it wont fit a 86 or 87 R

My Tusk billet cap has LTZ/KFX inscribed into it, and it is definitely on an 86 tank.

as far as I am aware there is no difference between the R tanks other then those plastic channels on the side of the tank.

i thought the same until I tried my tusk cap I have for sale now. it will not work for some reason, its like its not wanting to grab the threads

have you tried it on the later tank? I dunno what year tank I have, it doesnt have the plastic channels attached, so that makes it 88-89 right?

i havent tried it on a 88-89 so I really do not know for sure if it will fit the later tank or not, I know it doesnt fit the one I have here for sure.

the 88-89 tank is the same threads as the 400EX and 450R. the 86/87 250R's are different. They are a bigger size cap. the 88-89 are smaller

we ran into the same thing 86/87 tanks are different then 88/89. a yfz cap fit the 86/87.

So can anyone else confirm what other model caps will fit the 86-87 tanks?

I am using a Tusk Banshee cap marked YZ on the top for my 86/87 tank and it works great :macho . There is definitely a difference as I have both style tanks and 2 desert IMS versions.
