Can anyone tell me why KTM would not have a MX factory team next year. They have a xc team & iam sure a motorcycle team. A friend of mine tested one at Red Bud, & said it was the best oem quad he has ever been on & would beat most "A" riders at local races. "It rocks" is what he quoted but was disappointed when he found out they were not doing MX. Anyone know why??????????

I guess farr said they will supposedly have a team for 2010, nonetheless i think you will see a lot of am. and pro-am guys riding orange next year. Talked to a lot of people that are pretty pumped about the new bike...

i agree you will see more riders on orange next year, especially the guys who get dropped from a team or are moving up and have no factory ride...just my two cents

Exactly... a decent rider with a 'hookup' at a dealership can get 2 ktm's , 1 race and 1 practice bike for roughly the same cost as building ONE honda.

They probably don't need a factory team. So many people/racers bought the xc version and they will probably see how many people to buy the mx version without having a factory team, and saving a good bit of money in the end!

Hope not another HONDA company

i doubt it ktm updates their bikes frequently enough...if it keeps selling why update it, look at the xc version: it had a horrible seat cover and some bad plastic pieces and they updated those for this year

also consider this:

if the average pro and pro-am racer not on a team can put out 25k for the season, and lets say 5k of that goes to gas leaving 20k you can easily get 2 ktms, one race one practice, and any extra parts they would need to outfit thier rigs and be set for the season, not having to do a sing thing to the quad itself if its as good as they say it is, except maybe an exhaust?

now option 2: the rider buys another brand lets say the suzuki because its the most "race ready" next to the KTM, now a racer can get 2 of those for around 12 to 13k leaving 7 or 8k, now add in long travel suspension all around, racing wheels and tires, exhaust, cherry bomb, programmers, accersories, anti-vibe stem, handlebars, other control items, motorwork, and anything else i left out and you easily, easily exceed the 25k budget by a good 3k plus

it makes so much more sense for those guys to buy the ktms

I priced out a Honda equivalent to the KTM and it still had money left over before it was even the price for a KTM. It is cheaper to build another brand vs buying a KTM and building a quad you can choose who you want for a-arms, wheels, nerfs and make it more custom. I like KTM and what they are doing reminds me on Cannondale which i wish every company would do that but I would not buy one due to cost. Also if you built another quad I forgot about selling the parts you took off. Therefore its even cheaper to build you own TRX450 rather than buying that KTM

alrite lets see what i get here building a honda that would be capable of running in the pro or pro am class:

Quad $6849
Suspension/Controls
Walsh Long Travel Front A-Arms $1432
Fox Float Evol Front Shocks $1295
Walsh Swingarm and saviro linkage $1450
Revalve on rear shock $350
Walsh Steering Stem $290
Fasst Co Handle Bars $300
Powermadd Hand Guards with Rox Speed FX mounts $70
ELKA System 5 Steering Stabilizer $550

Motor/Intake
HMF Ironman Carbon Complete Exhaust $560
A fully worked pro caliper motor: $1000-1500
Hi-flow intake system $150

Tires/Wheels
Hiper Tech 3 Front and Rear $800
ITP MXR6 tires $250

Appearance:
Quad Tech Hump Seat w/cover $305
Quad Tech Carbon Hood $ 185
Graphics Kit $100

Misc:
Kill switch $30
Pro Armor Pro Grip Nerf Bars $210
Pro Armor Bumper $130
Pro Armor Grab Bar $70

my total i get for ONE race quad is $16876

making TWO cost $ 33752

so tell me how the honda is a cheaper route than the ktm?

by going that honda route you spend almost 8500 more than the KTM route, 8500 can buy alot of food and gas AFTER the 5000 alloted amount for gas

now this quad would be a superior quad to the ktm, but there also isnt any pro or pro-am rider thats going to leave them stock

did the xc guys leave theirs stock? no they didnt

hands down, no questions about it, it is cheaper to go with the KTMs

Were you getting a pro motor for $1500?? Try around $5000+

really just depends on who would build the motor could you have one for 5000 sure, in fact price it out id like to see it

toby at Moto-xperts did Brock Lyons motors as well as many other top riders check out his pricing and tell me he couldnt build one around the 2000 range that would make awesome power

And how did Brock Lyons do this year?? Nothing against Coby, but a PRO head alone done valves, head, port job, with all there little secrets alone starts a $1000. Now remember were talking about a winning Pro race engine. $5000 Minimum & probably higher, if you talked to the true engine builders.

True engine builder?

Here is a list of what we would have in a PRO/PRO-AM motor....

Here is a list assuming we are building a new 08' Honda stock bore/stroke MX motor.

Split cases/Reassemble $400.00
Isotropic polishing on all gears $250.00
Tranny mod $120.00
Knife rod/balanced Crank $450.00
MXP 15.5:1 piston $278.00
Aftermarket Ti valves $168.00 ea (4)
Dimmpled valve mod. $25.00 ea. (4)
Cam $285.00
Adj. cam gear $35.00
High psi spring kit w/Ti retainers $250.00
Full MXP Race head, Digitally flow tested, ampco seats/shortened guides $750
Aftermarket clutch $1000.00
Bored FCR w/jets $200.00

Roughly you will be looking at $4500-5500.00 if there is nothing else wrong with the engine upon dissassebly.

Well there it is an engine builder, glad someone had the costs figured out. & that is on a Honda I think the Yamaha would be a little bit more, Correct??

MOTO-XPERTS

Yes, add another cam, another valve and spring/retainer......it will cost a little bit more, but all this is not neccessary to acheive a high 50's hp race motor that can pull a holeshot even at the Pro-am level. Simply put, the power lies in the port design.

remember the stock KTM costs 11300 not 8500
