Hey I'm needing some advice deciding which engine to go with. I am considering between a yzf426 and crf450. What is the pro and cons of each. I will be putting it in my 400ex frame.

Now I'm leaning towards the crf because it is wet sump and I wouldn't have to worry about mounting or fabing an oil tank like the yz needs.

you can actually put a sump pump in the 426 so you dont have to worry about a oil tank.my tc440 has one istalled.alot nicer and cleaner looking then having a huge tank squeezed in the frame rails.

in my opinion,a crf motor is nicer then a 426 but alot more expensive.has more power also.but it also depends on how you like the power in motors.me personally,i like to scream my motor like i was riding a 125 two stroke.and the smaller motor like the 426 will let you ride it like that.where the 450 you would lug it and ride in the torque of the motor.

dont let anyone make your decisions for ya.get opinions from guys/girls on here and go with what you feel would work for your budget and your riding style.good luck with it bro.

Go with a crf, basically, the most durable engine vs all other hybrid choices. 426's are kinda out of date, really no point. I would just run a crf450 08, or any year....but if you really want to get yourself into something, I would try a brand new crf450 engine, EFI. Thats if you wanna dump 15 grand into it :P. It would be kinda hard with a 400ex geo frame.

I've got an 03 JB CRF chasis and a 2003 crf450 for my build.

Actually the 426 is way more reliable, their valves will last you twice as long than on a crf.i wouldnt say the motors are outdated, pretty much similar to the 450 bike motors. They are still formidable on the track in the hands of the right rider.

Honestly, I'm happy to have a hybrid with 55+ hp. I don't care what it is :P Suspension is what I care about the most in a bike period. 50 inch stance on a quad is the best thing you can do...

i'd have to agree with 2muchquad from what i've seen the yz well most yamie motors are more reliable, honda's always had a better frame being the 250r. and also no matter what motor you put in there it's gunna rip all depends on the rider i can keep up with the 450s on a piped and jetted R motor nothing else a 450 just makes for a lazier leasurly ride:D lol

My yz426 hybrid always ran way hot it would start to boil over with in 15-20 mins of hard riding and I was using a pwr radiator and a 400ex oil tank.

Ya. The 426 is also one of the only 4 strokes that you drive kind of like a 2 stroke. My 426 hybrid felt much faster than the 450r's yfz450's and my ltr450.

And a 400ex is somthing like 375 dry. When you do the engine swap you loose over 30lbs. So you end up lighter and faster than the production quads. YZ426 engine puts out 47hp while the yz450 puts out 49hp.
