Well I found a 2004 Honda CR85 for $1200 or best offer. It looks pretty clean. When I go to buy it I am going to ask to test ride it or at least crank it and see if it will go through the gears. Is there anything else that I should do? Were there any problems with the CR85's? Thanks.

Rings, leaks, tires, wheel bearings, sprockets, compression. ect et.

if you keep your eye out, you can find a good 125 in the same price range. but thats only if your ready for it. the 85s are a great bike imo. and they have probably the craziest powerband i have ever experianced, (cept a cr500). but everything zerologic said will probably be everything to look out for.

I ride trails only. I have ridden a yz125 and it was just to much for me. I'm only 5'5" also. I will check out all of the stuff that zerologic said. Are there any problems with the cr85's like recalls or anything?

honda is pretty much rock solid. you will just have to look for all the normal wear stuff...make sure that is in check.

see how its brakes and rotors look too, ask how often the crankcase oil was changed. ask if the chain has been replaced, ask if the fork seals have ever been replaced. should be good after that. also check to see if the spokes feel tight.

Alright thanks. This will be my first 2 stroke. I will check all of that out when I go look at it. I will hopefully go to check it out this weekend or next week. I am going to try to talk them down to about 8 or 9 hundred.

Well, since it is your first two stroker, twist the throttle and hold on. Those 85s have wicked power bands.

i have the same year cr 85 and it is crazy i can pull it up in 6th on loose gravel without a tire. and i only rebuilt it one and owned it from 2004. and i bagged the **** out of it but recently i broke my reaer hub so i havent rode it in awile. but for things to check for it sohuld start up 1st or 2nd kick if you just go down easy on the first one the nboot it on the 2nd one it sohuld fire up and if it starts easy then id just chec kfor leaky forks. and wheele bearings.

Its a used dirtbike, theres not really much to look out for. You just have to assume the worst [ last time I ever buy a used bike]

- I recently just baught a 2005 Yz250, thinking I got a hell of a deal bargaining the guy down to $2000. First went the engine, the complete engine, top end bottom end, power valve had major problem, clutch was toast, gears starting skipping 2nd ride. After dropping a good 2 grand in the motor it was time for new tires, another $140, then break pads $80. Then came shock, linkage and swingarm bearings another $400 after parts and labor, then came sprockets and a chain, another $140 later, then i found out the axle blocks were odd, another $50.

so here I am today with a 05 yz 250 with a shattered front hub and a good $5,000 later... waiting for another part to break.

Used bikes will always be used bikes unless they've never been started.

Thanks for all of the info. I have read that they foul plugs like crazy if you are not in the powerband. Is it true?

ZeroLogic

They won't foul like crazy, just a lot if you don't twist the throttle. Learn how to ride a two stroke and buy lots of spark plugs and keep them on ya with a wrench. You'll foul a lot of plug until you learn how to ride it. Thats what I did.:macho

That is what I was planning on doing. I will let ya'll know something as soon as I get the rest of the money up. I have $750 right now.

with my bike...i NEVER foul plugs. it is jetted perfectly and the plugs always show up a light brown color. the lest plug was in the bike for a yr, i just replaced it cuz it was a yr old. with the new one in there, i can ride however i want. i do ride the powerband alot, but if im in a situation where i cant or dont want to...i dont have to sweat it.

it is a really nice thing to not have to carry plugs and a wrench with me when i ride...lol.

that is why i have always been leery of used machines, but yamahas...especially their two strokes, have a rep for being super reliable. it sux you got a bad deal, but alot of them arent going to go over that way

when i got my bike, which was only about a month ago, i thought that it was scary fast, now it feels slower, i put a stage 2 cam in it, thinking that it might help a little, and i still feel like i want to go fast, and thats only after a month.

I was gonna say the same.... How the hell do you find a 450 slow?

I only trail ride. I have ridden my friends yz125 back in my trails and it was to much. It was not to much power for me, just to much power for my trails. If I get bored with the 85 I might go big bore and get some port work done.

well. i know its not really slow. but it doesnt feel as fast as day one. it even smoked a cr 500 the other day, but i just wished it had more snot, i plan on getting the head ported this winter, so that should maybe make me happier.

Well they ended up selling the 85 before I could get the rest of the money up. But I found a 97 Cr80 with a full FMF exhaust for 800 bucks. I'm going to go look at it tomorrow.
