well 20w-50 i think goes down to about 40 while 10w-40 goes to about 0. If ya change it to a 15w-50 it should be okay year round unless you expirience severe stuff. If you run too thick of an oil in cold weather, if it isnt too far below the warning, it will just be hard to start, but too much below and it may no go throgh the oil lines causing the motor to sieze:eek: if you arent sure, CHANGE IT.

I am running 20w-50 now. TC told me it should be ok year round. I won't be riding much unless it's around 30 degrees or so do you think I will be ok? I let it warm up real good.

Well I am going to call TC and ask him about running 20w-50 because I think with the 400 running so hot once it's warmed up there shouldn't be any problems.

it will go down to a certain temp., but what out a wind chill factor on the front of the engine (also the tank)????? anyone got some facts on this?>?????

I called TC and he said 20w-50 year round would be fine, but before you start beating on your 400 he said to take your glove off, and make sure the oil tank is hot.

I've always run 10W-40 in the winter, just to be on the safe side.

doesn't mobil 1 make like 0w-40 or something like that. is this stuff too thin to run in winter? also, what is the difference in 0w-40 and 10w-30 for example? which is heavier? thanks

Here are some spec sheets for you all to check out; they show the pour point ( cold temps ) levels for both the 10w-40 / 20w-50. Also, there is a spec sheet for the 0w-40 too !

So do you Guys think I should get 10w-40 or just stick with the 20w-50? I already bought 20w-50 so it will go in for this change. I have had 10w-40 and 20w-50 and the 20w-50 did not look, feel, or do anything different then the 10w-40.
If I read Amsoil site right it shows the 20W-50 Synthetic High Performance Motorcycle Engine Oil good for temperatures down to -33.

It's primarily in how the fluids perform once under heat and stress; you should be looking for a superior film strength, heat dissipating characteristics and base oil that is formulated for longer drains; afterall, why pay for higher quality oils if you're just gonna throw them away like we did with the petros ? Cheers !

Went to my first Quad TT races today since October and it sure felt great hearing those babies roar ! Just being able to smell that distinguishable odor in the air, it was great !

So will I be ok running the Maxima 20w-50 Petroleum blend or not?

ridefastrgetoff

to use; they are not all the same even though they say synthetic and they do not perform the same way !

Man I am looking at the facts and it says the 20w-50 synthetic is good down to -33. Is there something I'm missing? That's all I could find. I think I will just run the 20w-50 and be done with it.

I misunderstood you - thought you were still unsure as to what to use. If the oil you're using says it protects that low you should be good to go.

I just checked the Maxima site and it says it is ok up to -5. I will be ok with that for sure. Thanks for the help Ridefastrgetoff.

Kinda late, but just to add my two cents. I usually run 10W30 in the winter for all my vehicles, bikes, quad, etc.... Then switch to the thicker 10W40 for summer when it gets hotter (and oil breaks down quicker).

No, run Mobil 1 Synthetic 0w-40 in the winter, and Synthetic 15w-50 in the summer. PM me if you have questions, but these are the best ever oils.
