probably $3000 tops and you would probably be lucky to get that. Your best bet would be to part it. That seems to be the only way to get any money out of the R's these days.

x2 but he'd probably be better off putting the stock cylinder back on and sell the aftermarket.

250r's really don't hold any value anymore unless they are stock original and mint.

To the average rider there are tons of used 4-strokes out there for $3000 so why buy an R for 3K when it's 20 years old, it doesn't make sense to them.

I think that depends on who you ask, but it's true for the majority of ATV consumers I think, kids and younger adults especially. Trendiness is a serious marketing force and it has a tendency to ignore value, perceived or real.

A 3k 450 that someone doesn't want anymore has a good chance of it needed some sizable money sunk into the high strung engine, and many of the other maintenance parts common to both platforms may or may not need help in both bikes depending on use and maintenance.

A 250R motor can be overhauled with common wear items for maybe around 360 baring crank work, clutch or counterbalancer typically. Plus a handy guy can do the work in his garage minus the bore. Completing the head work alone that you have to farm out to special equipment will completely trump that bill, even if this pricing is optimistic. LASleeve (http://www.all250r.com/UsefulContent/2strokeVs4strokeMaint.pdf) a while back posted an article putting head work alone at about a 700 bill with labor. Someone else can confirm or deny this.
175 all oem bearings and seals
55 bore
80 piston and bearing
45 oem gasket kit
355

You have to face market value though and 2strokes are not the flash bulb darling anymore. It's a tough thing to beat whether the 2stroke makes better financial sense or not. I think your best bet like was mentioned is put it back to stock as much as possible and someone will be more attracted to the iconic quad for more money.
