Last years thread was pretty cool , so here we are again for the 2008 version:p

I screwed up and forgot fresh batteries and the camera crapped out last night but we got a doe to start off the season:D

I will get the other camera up in the next few days and see if we can catch the bucks the boys say yesterday on film before i put them in the freezer this season:devil:

I think the deer around us have found a empty house in the woods with A/C cause we haven't been seeing any the last few weeks. But i'm sure they are just moving at night.

Pappy
08-09-2008, 03:15 PM
There wasnt much action last night. We rode until almost dark, and saw a doe with a fawn but only 1 deer paid us a visit on the camera.

I would geuss this is the doe who's fawn died about a week after birth, as the neighbor found it dead. She arrived at 9:01 pm, and stayed until 3:58am.

I hate to see a fawn die, but it happens. This doe should be one of the first to come into heat when the rut comes in so i will keep my eye on here and let her live if she comes by during bow season

quads14589
08-11-2008, 07:20 PM
what do you throw on the ground to get them in there?

Pappy
08-11-2008, 07:29 PM
This time of year, 1 pound of corn every other day. We also throw all of our garden scraps there as the young deer munch on them(along with everything IN my garden:p )

I wont feed more then the above until about 2 weeks or so before rifle season, then they will be fed twice a day. This serves two purposes....1) brings the deer in for a good look and we can determine if we want to harvest it or not and 2) it keeps the deer hanging near our property and not wandering off to far for others to kill. I hate seeing peopel shoot a small buck just for the sake of killing it.

We also provide year round minerals for the deer, food plots and selective plantings to help get them as much nutrition as we can.

Neighbor said he saw 9 turkeys yesterday so hopefully we will see them on the camera at some point!

quads14589
08-12-2008, 03:34 AM
i thorw down cracked corn every once and awhile but the turkeys come out ant eat it all

Last year my deer seemed to come in after dark, then about mid september 8-10 am was good, same with 5 till dark. I watched many last year in the bottom a few hours before dark as they milled around before coming up teh ridge to hit my feeder.

I learned along time ago this saying....."Hunt the ridges in the morning and bottoms in the evening" and from what I see it holds true most fo the time!

I have more pics, but just of the regular does...nothing worth posting right now

Nice work! Those Matthews are sweet bows, I shoot an older MQ1 and love it (I can't afford a new Matthews:p ) That's some pretty good shooting. Never robin hooded one, cut a lot of vanes though. When that frame is done I'll have to bring the bow up and shoot with you (I'll blow the dust off it first.)

I learned from a guy who shot competitions. He had a shed that we did all the work to our bows and between him and his wife they had stacks of arrows that they robin hooded like that. She was a multi time national champ(sponsored by Martin) and he placed in the top ten for years (can't remember what type of shooting they did). I was always in awe when I'd walk in there, but never could pound them in there like that. I've always had a knack for finding a way to put a bullet or an arrow in a deer at crazy angles but could never shoot that way at a target. Needless to say I'm a little jeolous! ;) Keep up the good shooting boys!

No,didn't sell out.Just got away from shooting tournaments. All my buddies got out of it and it wasn't as much fun going to shoots by myself.I still have a Pearson that I hunt with but haven't done much of that the last couple years.I will have to blow the cob webs off the old hunting rig and brush up a little before the cookout :D

Yeah I bought mine back in 1999. I shot a few others that Matthews had out at the time but the MQ1 fit me the best and I felt it was the easiest to shoot. I've thought about buying a new one the last few years but can't justify the price with the little bit I actually do bowhunting (ducks have most of my attention now a days). It still accounts for around one deer a year so I can't complain.

I'll have to bring up something I killed with a gun, they all taste the same! Just make sure nothing is down range I'd hate to stick an arrow in farm equipement or one of your neighbors (that might not be so bad depending on the neighbor). :D

I won't bring the 7mm so the bucks are probably alright, unless they try and commit suicide, that's usually how I get my deer with the bow. Don't laugh it's a lot of work, actually a skill, finding the deer ready to end it all!:p

Haha, I have a few old long bows in the basement. Last time I strung one up I was 10 and proceeded to stick an arrow in my neighbors house. It was about ten feet up and luckily fell out before he got home. We used to aim straight up and let them fly (they never left sight), run like hell and laugh about it. We tried a compound and when the arrow left sight we started to panic, luckily it didn't hit anyone. A bunch of redneck kids stuck in the suburbs I guess.:(

Our season doesnt start for three weeks yet, so 99% or so of them the velvet will be gone. If you do happen to get one in velvet you have 7 days to notify the DNR and they will give you a special permit for it.

Nice bucks!!!!

I have been having camera/battery issues non stop the past week or so. Yesterday was icing on the cake when the box the camera mounts in decides to break. A new camera was returned as it did not work for chit(remington ghost model)

With no way to mount the unit, I set it on the ground for a different angle. To my surprise...I got a pic of a turkey!! Ive been working non stop to get them to come in here and it is working. You can see some new growth from teh plantings we have done in the woods.

The deer here are so hung up on the fresh green growth out in the fields that they are not spending much time in the woods or coming to feeders as much, but that will change shortly.

Thanks, hopefully I get some more this week, and hopefully one of the bigger two decide to show up on the 13th!!Thats cool that you got some birds coming into your cam now.Â_ It looks to me as though its a tom or jake too.Â_ Once they find something they like, they will be there FOREVER!Â_ Hopefully you get your camera problems resolved this week so you can use them for what they are made for.

Narrowed the camera issue down to bad batteries...they leaked and not sure if that camera will ever work again. bought 2 more however.

also been having an issue with the new neighbor kid. he has been riding down to "look" at the deer on my feeder every hour on the hour:grr: i chatted with him yesterday and i have my fingers crossed he will listen and will stop. he has been running the small strip of woods his dad owns and my other neighbor told me he has deer running out of there at full speed every evening. we cant do anything about what he does on his parents land, but it will just make me that much more stern when he is caught on my place again. one camera will be set up out of his reach to monitor a property line, i kind of figure his dad is the type that thinks lil johnny does nothing wrong.

I cant wait till the market comes around and i can move to a place where i have no neighbors

hey pappy i think i figured out why my pics where so fuzzy, it does help to put them on high quality instead of low quality.

we are on our first year of antler restictions and i think it will be a good thing, i just hope that more people will let the smaller basket rack 8's go and get bigger.

My exact words, Pappy that is definetely a interesting looking shed, I would love to see if the other side is as unusual. With just a little over 2 days until our season opens, I am so pumped!! We have awesome sign and a couple nice ones to pick from.

this is turning out to be an amazing thread. some of the bucks are really really nice shooters. i would like to ask Pappy, and the guy that has the pic with the big sausage fest of bucks: How long have you been raising your deer herd. we've been living here for a year and a few months and i never did any type of herd management last year because i just didnt have the funding as i do this year. i had a nice 8 point get away from me, on the next to last day of season last year(actually jan 08), but other than that one i've only seen spikes, 4 points, and this year i've got a few 6 points and one might be an old shooter that is literally old and goin out of his prime .

i know there are big bucks around here because of the swamp thats in the back 40 behind our 5 acres. i just cant them to come out. i've heard plenty of those "swamp buck" stories from the locals in the neighborhood, and they've told me if you can ever get those bucks to come from out of there for 5 seconds, you might have the Alabama state record.

Pappy

Ive been working on our property for almost 5 years to better the food sources. There were a few deer here when I moved in, but everyone around here would just see 1 shooter then scrubs....now even they cant believe what is walking around.

2 reasons for that.....

1. More poeple in this are equals less poaching

2. Better food equals healthier does and stronger, heavier fawns which grow better and produce better bucks.

well its certainly turned out good for you by looking at the pics. i've been hunting for about 7-8 years now, and its really always just been hunting, never any type of management. but being the only one that hunts our 5 acres, and all of these ridges and bottoms around here with permission from my neighbors, i've learned alot about there moving patterns and feeding and other what nots, or at least for this particular area anyways. its just been fun watching some of the deer grow that was here when i first started watching them on camera, and then since season went out earlier this year is been cool seeing some different bucks for the first time.

the problem with alabama is, is that overall as a state its really over populated with does. i have some healthy does in my herd no doubt, with a few probably no less than a 140 pounds and thats a big doe in alabama. before last year when the implemented the 3 buck rule, people were waxing what ever came out with horns on it, so alot of the young bucks never made it. of course theres the outlaws who will still kill 5-10 bucks a year, but you just cant fight ignorance. i guess we'll see how it turns the buck herd around in the state within a few years

We have been hunting this propery for three years now and every year we have seen more and bigger bucks. We only harvest mature does off this property and QDM style bucks. Alot of the neighbors around here also go by the same QDM standards. We are so lucky to have permission to hunt here. Last year 40 of the 80 acres got tilled up and planted with clover for CRP. Last year it was only 10 inches tall around hunting time, this year is waist high! The deer are more comfortable coming out this year. The main thing to practice is, only shoot what makes you happy, but remember if you pass him up and he makes it till next year it will make you proud of what you did. You also need your neighbors to help with this to make it work. It takes alot of patience, hard work and more than just you to make this work. Good Luck!

Also where we are in wisconsin, its earn a buck. You need to shoot a doe before you can shoot a buck, another factor in why we see so many bucks.

mod440ex
09-12-2008, 02:59 PM
those are some mighty fine deer you have there.

i am hoping that the size and quality of bucks we have around our area will start to improve with the antler restriction we have this year. i like the earn a buck deal that seems like a great way to control the doe to buck ratio.

Bow season started for me on the 13th. Not much luck here either. I am in earn-a-buck, which means I still need to shoot a doe before I can even think of the big boys. With the warm temperatures and the full/nearly full moon, not much has been moving in the daylight to much. Seen a couple does on Sat. night but got out of range before I could get a shot. Hopefully tonight works better in my favor!

I went out Monday night and saw five bucks and NO DOES! All five were within shooting distance and three were shooters. I would do anything (well almost anything) to get a buck tag. Pappy send some of those does up this way so I can get that tag. Earn-a-buck is good for the buck population but its so hard to shoot a doe first. Going out tonight again hopefully to see does at the same range as those bucks were.

Last years hunting season was hell for me, i had the flu really bad, and my stand sits at a spot where theres alot of wind. Nice looken deer there Pappy. Headn back down to WV in Nov. to do some more archery hunting in the Seneca Rocks area. Hope to run into some nice deer this year. Had decent luck last year but would like to do better this year.

May be written some where in the 13 pages but what camera are you using Pappy? I've been running a Moultrie GameSpy 100, Moultrie I40, and a Moultrie D40. Plus I also have a Bushnell and a Wildview. Wish the bear would have ate the whole Wildview. Moultrie I40 is awesome and a buddy that runs it and the cuddeback likes his moultrie better.

I believe I am using the Moultrie D40. The 2 new ones I have arent as good as far as picture quality as the one I had last year but they do pretty good.

Good luck when you head out!

Well, cool weather is here, it was 26 this morning. At 6 am I was watching my cameras flash from the porch:p It stopped about 6:45am so I tried to slip in hoping the deer had moved over the ridge and would return after daylight......wasnt to be as I could hear them shuffling off as I entered the woods.

We had 6 bucks and 11 doe's 30 yards behind the house all evening yesterday, but it was sunday. I even slid open the window just to see if I could get away with it. They try that **** again and I will let loose a 2219 out the window!
Tonight should be friggon spectacular!!

Thanks, I am going to need it:p

Sat from 3:30pm till 7:30pm ...WELLLL after dark:ermm:

I had doe's all around but they were spooky as the neighbors cows were going beserk, he was running his tractor with the radio blaring, the rest of teh neighborhood kids were screaming like they were being murdered etc. Very un-nerving evening.

About 30 minutes before dark I heard a deer behind me and watched the 9 walk out roughly 50 yards or so. He was on alert big time. He went back in the thicket and I never heard him walk off. So I stayed put not wanting to spook him when I climed down. 10 minutes after dark I had deer (bucks) under the stand but way past legal shooting time and so dark you couldnt see anything. Once they went on I got down finally.

I will be moving a stand this morning and letting it rest for a day or so before going back after them. Even though I get alot of pics, these deer are 100% wild and allow you no room for many mistakes.

Cody missed the 9 pointer

The wind was crazy today, gusting to 35 mph. I told Cody when he got off the bus to get showered and in the stand directly behind our house. There were already 3 deer feeding there but I told him they would run off and come back. He wasnt hardly in his stand when 2 small ones came back, snorted at him and ran off. He got dejected thinking the wind was so bad and that any deer coming in would wind him, and he got down and went back to the house.

After a while, the wife told him the reason I seem to always get deer was that I hunt no matter what the conditions. That must have sunk in and he dressed again and went back out. As he stepped out of the shop, the 9 and a 6 were standing there looking at him. He tried a shot but with 25 yards seperating the buck and him and the deer alert, the buck ducked the arrow and trotted off.

I geuss he learned a few things, and I told him i wouldnt pass up any more shooters since he had his chance and screwed it up. I let 5 bucks walk under me tonight, including the two that were heading to Cody. He wants a buck now, he will have to earn it as I will be drawing blood and filling the freezer(hopefully)

Its all good, atleast it wasnt a huge trophy, but it would have been nice for him to stick one.....and if I would have known he had missed, I would have shot him when the 9 walked BACK under my stand:p

Atleast your seeing them and Cody is being taught at the same time (kind of like school, right?) Going out tonight for the first time this year with my buck tag!! I finally shot a doe saturday night and cant wait to see what happens tonight! I am taking the grunt tube with and see if I can pull something out early.

Stuck the big 9 pointer tonight. Quartering away shot at 10 yards. Arrow looked to hit his ribs on his left side, back a bit and smacked the opposite shoulder. He left with the arrow dancing around inside him.

Found a few drops of blood, no arrow and a tuff of hair at shot sight. Looks to be side hair, shorter and of that color.

Its going to be a long night:(

10-22-2008, 07:25 PM
Good luck finding him. I know sometimes a shot that you think is bad turns out to be a quick retrieval, I have my fingers crossed.

I went out tonight and saw 7 turkeys and two bucks (a fork and a spike) definetely was hoping to see something bigger.

Those are some nice bucks down Kenny! All I've managed is a little sika doe with the bow. I smoked a nice buck during muzzleloader but never ended up finding him (it was out of the same stand you killed the doe out of last year, we moved it back to a live tree). I crushed him with the first shot and he buckled and rolled got up and ran 20 feet and crashed down again, I could see his feet kicking than nothing. I was getting ready to leave when he came out so I had to dig around for another load, by the time I got reloaded he was up and walked off like nothing happened. I couldn't get another shot even though I watched him stroll off 150 yrds to the right, too thick (I thought it was a different buck cause he didn't show any signs of being hit, he was still chasing does). Found a little blood where he crashed twice but no blood trail, hopefully I just found the no man's zone high behind the shoulder, but was a little un-nerved about the whole thing. So I hung up the muzzleloader and pounded the ducks all this week!:D

Yeah I was a little pissed but oh well it happens. The funny part is the last deer I hit and didn't find was standing 40 yrds from this one, 12 yrs ago. It was out of a different stand but shooting the same piece of short grass at around 300 yrds.

We'll have to figure out when you can come down again. The second weekend of gun season looks good for me if you can make it. I'm taking that Fri off cause my older brother is coming in from MI so that would give you 2 days to get on a nice buck. But we'll figure something out. In the meantime I hope you get on that big boy, that one is a hammer for a WV mountain buck!:)

I tried something new this year and headed out to the big woods (National Forest) for the opening of the gun deer season in Wisconsin. When we got out of the truck an hour before opening it said "0 degrees" on the mirror in the truck! At 9:30 I shot this doe at 140 yards. She was the eleventh deer I had seen on opening morning. All does, no antlers. She was aged at 5-1/2 years old and weighs easily over 150 lbs. It was a long drag back to the truck, but it was well worth. P.S. ths is my third season hunting and this is the first deer I have taken during the regular gun season, shot others during T-zone though. I was pumped!! As of Sunday night our group (12 people) had 7 does and 2 bucks, all taken on public land.

I got back home from up north last night and had today off so I decided to go out hunting at the farm. Took my climber and headed out, I was situated in my stand by 11:15 this morning and by 11:45 I shot my first buck!! It was a 35 yard shot (shotgun only) and he dropped right in his tracks! Nothing huge, but its a place to start. I will post pics later when I get them off the camera. I think its going to be a good night (I'm getting thirsty). Oh yeah, its the first deer shot out at the farm out of 10 guys, three days into the season and it only took me 30 minutes.

No, I only wear a vest on public land. I do put it on when I am getting the deer out of the woods though, and yes its our state law to wear 400 sq. inches of orange.

In Wisconsin you have to have atleast 50% of your upper body in orange and if a hat is worn it has to be atleast 50% orange. Its an easy way to not get shot! Its not like deer see color anyways!

Hell dude, anything goes with your 1st!!!

I spent all day in the stand except for an hour for lunch. Cody came in to his stand at 3:30 after school. At 4:30 I saw a doe on damn near a flat run bust out of a thicket with that big 12 on her! He cut higher then she did as he tried to keep her pinned in the bottom and I used every bit of what I know to stop him and find a hole to get a bullet in him to no avail!

I jumped on the radio and told Cody to get ready and he said when they came by him the buck was still running her but they had climbed higher on the ridge and the shot wasnt safe due to houses on the hill.

Glad to have seen him, but I wont be happy till I have my hands on his horns!

It was at our hunting camp between the shed and the out house.
I was at the window when the camera was taking the pictures.
Thats why the bear are looking over the camera.
Right after the first picture... the two bears stood up and growled at each other!! The chocolate one I guessed to be around 400lbs.
