Nice quad but I just dont get KTM......the 505 seems like a big waist of time. It's only 470cc, a grand total of 20cc bigger than the normal 450.......
Why wouldn't you just offer a big bore as a kit from the KTM hard parts catalouge.

any one know what MSRP is ? It is very nice but if I hafta spend 10 grand like the cannondale moto's I would just rather buy a 6 thousand dollar honda or yamaha and buy the parts I want

i beleive the mrsp is around 12K. twice as much as my quad haha. but i think it would be worth it for someone who wants to race and doesnt know too much about building a decent machine.

I guess KTM launched their 2009 models at Round 10 of the AMA PRO ATV Nationals.
They really are nice!

There is only one thing I don't get, why does the MX version have less travel than the XC? Is it so it doesn't bottom out

I'd wager due to the smaller tires and general lower ride height in MX.. upward movement is limited to stop frame bottomout.. and downward travel is limited by component binding restrictions (ball joints, tie-rods, etc).

I was thinking I wanted one until I saw the MSRP!!!!!!!!!
For 12 large I sure ccan build a nice 450r. Or even better buy one used and fully built for about 7-8, leaving plenty of $$$ for racing funds>

But can you go to the bank and borrow $12K for a 450R? Most people can't.
Will the 450R engine compete with the KTM engine? It takes a pretty serious 450 to run with my 525. What does it cost to build a 55+ horsepower 450R? $2000? I don't know, I'm just asking. Most 525sx dyno runs I have seen are about 52 or 53 horsepower. The new twin cam engines are suposedly much more powerful so this bike should have at least 50 horsepower right?

I agree it is a nice "package deal" and if you have to finance that is a way to go. Nothing like paying 16K for a 12K bike. Comparing a 450 to a 525 is not quite fair. To get a 450 to 55 hp without going big bore is a few bucks but used 450's are available cheap and a few already are done up. I looked at a 54hp all lonestar and Axis shock bike going for 4,500. Worst case senario you put 2K into it to freshen up things.
Ktm's have never had trouble making power. They are usually animals. Like I said, I would LOVE to have one but not for 12K + all the other goodies you know you got to have. Stock shocks, no matter who makes them are mass produced and limited without being modified for the specific racer, then its exhaust, bars etc...

it may be true that you can buy used 450Rs for less, but in my experience used machines don't make for good race bikes. Cracked frames, weak transmissions and all the little things you have to start constantly replacing get really anoying mid season. So at least compare the price of setting up a new 450R to the price of the KTM.
I would go whit the ds450x mx it has a good chassie nice motor i like the rotax motors Much travel mayby you change shocks but its seams nice any way whit the long travel front and rear :D

Aha :D Yea but i didnt mean that the motor was more powerful i meant that i like the rotax motors :D And i think the weak spot of aluminium is the welding and the ds450 is not welded its bolted but i think the ktm 450/505 mx is a nice bike but i think ds450 is a better choise cuz of the price :D

I love the DS450's. But, honestly the SX's smoke the DS in the details. (It's got the newer twin cam KTM motor, best brakes in the market, stabilizer mount, adjustable rizer block, hydraulic clutch, etc..)
Only downside to the new SX is I think the front end geometry could be better. Other than that everything else is top notch. Not a huge fan of the plastics, never have been, but they do look a LOT better in person than in photos, I must admit.
Honestly, I'd love to have either one. And it would be a tough choice.

Have you seen them with the front fenders off? They look a ton better.
