For thte last few years ive been riding a 1986 suzuki 230lt 4 wheeler- (5 gears and reverse and 5 low gears) - it also has NO suspension on the rear.. which is why i wanted something else. Also - smokes really bad-its just worn out- last year i took the head off and put valve seals on it and i noticed that the piston was so loose in the cylinder..anyway- this is what surprises me-
i bought a 2003 rancher 2wd in exc. shape- tires still had 1/2 tread left so it hadnt been ridden very much--- it runs smooth.
The 230 blows the 350 rancher away in a drag race and top speed-I cant believe the rancher cant put up more of a fight- my gps clocked a measley 49 mph top speed for the rancher.

Welcome to atvriders.

Sounds to me that you need to step it up to a 400ex or a 450. The rancher is a utility quad, so your not going to get real aggressive with it.

Bigger tires help. You could get a more restrictive pipe.

No, bigger tires will slow you down, an if you want to fo faster you would want a LESS restcricted pipe.

LMAO.....some people should really think before replying sometimes. Bigger the tire increases the top speed, smaller the tire, you will loose top speed but accelerate faster. ;)

Go with a good pipe and air filter for starters. What size tires (F/R) do you have on it now?

yea its a whole different world you got into, utilitys are made for torque (usually)

larger tires and a free flowing exhaust will help,

dont feel bad we have a 05 rancher 400 and i cant get it past 52 :p
