so the gytr kick crank kit is the only thing you need?

yep, it comes with all the little gears, and the lever. you can also get a hot start lever from gytr if you need that.

just did the same exact thing to mine....very very clean setup...lost about 20-30 pounds loosing the starter, gears, battery, and other things...

the only thing i had a problem with was the gytr kicker..it was back ordered so i ordered a 98 yz350(suppose to be the same)

Can you still leave the battery and starter on and use the kick for backup? Whats the compression feel like when kickstarting it? Do you have to shave the rear fender any? Post up some pics of the installs. Is the hot start needed with this setup?

i havent yet tried it im still waiting on the kicker...but i believe its going to be just like a dirtbike..

i believe you could still leave the starter on but im not 100% sure..

and imo the hotstart isnt needed

you CAN Leave all the stuff on, and just use it as back-up. you dont have to mess with the fender, since its a forward kick.

I thought those kits were rearward kicking like the dirtbikes. Did they change them?

Yes, you can run the kick start and leave the E-start on.

Yes, the GYTR kicker lever will hit the fender. There is a line on the under side of the fender that's a guide for where to cut it for the kicker to clear.

Yes, you can use the '98 YZ250 lever without cutting the fender. That's what I have on my bike cause I didn't want to cut the fender.

Yes, if you leave the fan on and remove the battery, you will have problems when the quad gets hot enough that the fan comes on. If you remove the battery and the fan kicks on, it will pull power from the stator and then the quad won't be getting enough power to produce a good spark resulting in the quad mis-firing and running like chit. I removed my battery, starter, all the E-start gears, fan, and pretty much anything else not needed to run. My bike has been like that for almost 3 years now and I'll never go back. I love it.

A couple more things I haven't seen mentioned yet. You need to make sure your jetting and valve specs are right. That is very important to how easily the YFZ will start with a kicker. Also, you WILL have to do the cam mod in order to be able to kick it over. I knew a guy that put a kicker on and didn't do the cam mod and it was next to impossible to kick over. I saw a 325 pound dude stand on the kicker lever and it held him up. But if you do the cam mod, it's actually very easy to start up once you learn the technique. I can start mine on the first or second kick every time. I can even start mine sitting on the seat.

I personally don't think the hot start is needed. I've never had one, and never needed one.

The YFZ is DEFINATELY NOT a forward kick either.

ive always had headlights, i never took them off. but so your saying if i put the kick start on my quad and dont do the cam mod it wont kick over? so why would they sell it and not tell people to do the cam mod?

i just got my kicker and wow...this ****er is so hard to kick over. like holy hell...its crazy? anyone else have this problem

gtilley45

Without the cam mod, it will be next to impossible to kick over and I can tell you that for an absolute fact. I'm pretty sure when the YFZ first came out, they were telling people that the cam mod needed to be done to use the kicker. It just seems like I remember something to the affect of "Must alter the cam timing to use the same cam timing as the YZ engine." being on Yamaha's website.

you can will kick over with out the mod but you'll have to go to the gym for a month just to start it, so DO the cam mod, it gives it more power to.

How much trouble is it to remove the E-start gearing from the engine? Do you have to alter the wiring harness any when removing all non-required parts from the bike, or can you leave all the OEM plugs intact?

well it not so bad now just got to time it right..but i will deff have to do the cam mod cause its so hard to do still
