ive been doin some offroading with some of my buddys and they all got 150's or jeep cherokees, whats the best kind of mudding truck out there? an old f-150 or 1500 that you can pick up cheap and beat the **** out of it or is it now in all of the jeeps?

if your just wanting a truck to play in the mud with get a toyota tacoma, they have a short wheelbase and they go really good. jeeps are also good, if you dont mind not having a truck. if you want a bigger truck get you a old chevy, fords are ok mudders but it just seems they have more electrical problems.

if u get a truck just make sure u dont get a half ton! you ll need 3/4 ton or if u get a half make sure u put a 14 bolt under it cause the 10 bolt wont last long if u wheel the heck out of it!

you know local mud pits and woods drivin, reason i was talken about the 1/2 ton is because its the f-150 got the straight 6 which is almost bullet proof and he wants nothing for it and has low miles

Ok, im sure ill get flamed...

But Suzuki Samurai's are cheap, great on gas and made great little trail rigs.

i agree 100% with the samurai, anything with a short wheelbase will be great in the mud.

So... playing the devils advocate here, but what exactly is the point in the chassis being that high if the suspension links are still that low? Would seem the only thin you gain his an insanely high center of gravity and getting the electrical systems up higher.

Also, how do you expect that center attachment for the 4 links to last without an triangulation?

I'll probably get flamed too but my explorer was awesome. Get one with a 4.0 SOHC and it will pull itself out of almost anything.

i almost bought a geo tracker for this reason, theres this company called calmini and they make alot of stuff for them, also i think rangers and s-10s are good in the mud

I knew someone would say that. The truck isnt even close to finished, the basket underneath is still going to get alot more bracing, and the truck actually has quite a bit of grund clearrance.

I sat a 5 gallon bucket under the axle tube and still had a foot of clearance. Havign the truck up so high is more for the tires to clear and because the we can:devil:

The transfer case thats going in it has about a 2 foot drop (SCS--same thing thats in Gravedigger, Max D., etc)...

The truck is fairly wide too, so it wont matter that the COG is high. Plus this thing is going to be a tractor, in the sense that it wont be out there slinging mud 30 feet in the air. We're actually building it as more of a towing/ pull-out truck.

We have a 40 ton hydrualic winch going on the back of it thats run off of a PTO on the transmission, so Im fairly sure that it will acomplish any task we require of it.

And the AC blows at 32 degrees!

My 97 ranger was awesome offroad. My buddy used his 04 F150 for offroad. I had 31" tires, he had 33" tires. His was regular cab short bed, my ranger was extended cab short bed. I could go so many more places he couldn't it wasn't even funny. The short wheel base, light weight and decent ground clearance were awesome. There were logs and dirt piles I could go right over that his front end would push right on to. If I ever get another vehicle for offoard use it will definitely be a ranger or tacoma. The small trucks are where it's at. Especially if you dont have a lot of money and plan on keeping it mostly stock.

Other than that I think I'd go for a bronco II.

Samurais are also very inexpensive to build for offroad use and are very good.

i dont know if you go on rides with other big trucks like i do but just to let you know, you are going to make big money with that tow truck. thats if you want to charge people. there is a tow truck like yours where i ride at and he makes all kinds of money hauling broke trucks back to the camp.

now thats a sweet truck, lifted trucks are what i grew up around but i have the same respect for them trucks too. it would look pretty cool lowered.

My dad used to have an old Toyota pickup. Basically before they gave it a name (tacoma) it was just called a toyota.

It was lifted with 34"s on it.

That was the BEST truck off-road i ever been in. Toyotas were built for offroad. If you look at the old toyota pickups and even the new tacomas, they have really high ground clearance.

yeah man, i like toyota's and all, but i'llnever buy one. my uncle had a 2004 tacoma, and the frame has allready rusted out. he took it to get serviced and the dude is like hey, you cant drive this, he took a hammer and hit the frame, and like big chunks fell out.

toyotas are rust buckets, but that guy didnt take care of his obviously.

My dads was an 80's and just started to get bad with rust in the bed right before we sold it.

If you paint the frame with POR15 it will last a long time and wont rust.
Dodge is also pretty bad:grr: my dads started rustin on the fenders.

And, when my dad bought one new in the 80's (different one then the one i mentioned) it was the only truck that actually had an offroad warrenty. If a rear-end broke or something of that nature off-roading, it was covered under warranty

yz rider65
07-23-2008, 08:21 PM
was that warrenty for the dodge or the toyota? and my uncle like, he just drove it back and forth to work. that's all it did, no mods, no demolition derbys, nothing. just drove it to work and back. and it just rusted in a few years.

it was for the toyota. Dont know if they still do it, this was in the 80's, but they did have an offroad warranty, and the only manufactuer to offer one.

Thats strange with the 04. I know ive seen 04 dodges already rusted to hell. I know yotas are bad also, but my god.

I don't know why dodge and yota are like that. you'd think they would special paint the frames or something to prevent rust.

yeah, or even make them out of a better metal maybe? idk. could paint really make a frame last that much longer, like years?

07-23-2008, 08:44 PM
toyota has a recall on all their tacoma's from like 95 to 04 or so because of the rusting frames. they give 150% of the trucks value towards a new truck, or they cut you a check on the spot.

i agree with all who say toyota is an offroad machine. i had a 97 tacoma x cab. it was great off road stock with new tires. i went a little crazy with it and dropped in a lt1 engine, dana 60 front, 14 bolt rear, np203 transfer case, 10 " of total lift. went anywhere you pointed it. mud, sand, hills, rocks, trail, no trail, it went there.

i think this is what the O.P. is looking for tho.....

idk about regular paint.

My dad painted his frame on the dodge with POR15. The stuff is expensive, but ever since he did it, no rust even after he sold it.

It was the fenders that were startin to rot then.:cuss:

it all depends on how much salt they use on the roads in the winter where you live too. they use alot around where i live so all the frames and bodies rust.

I say go with a 78-85 Toyota with straight axles. The axles are bullet proof. I have a D-50 with Straight axles with 529s with 42" TSL's with a 650HP Big Block Mopar with a 727 with a 4000 stall and shift kit. Transfer case is a 203.

Just a little education, Not being a di** or nothing but they never made a powerstroke non turbo. Everyone calls a ford diesel a powerstroke and its not. The powerstroke was designed in late 1993 as a Direct Injection (meaning they done away with the mechanical injection pump) turbo charged 7.3. For about a year before that for made a turbo charged Indirect injection engine and called them a "Turbo diesel" and from 82 to 92 they had the Indirect injection Naturally asperated diesel, Which was a 6.9 up till 1987 then they went up to the 7.3.................Wasnt being mean, I grew up riding in for diesels my whole life being thats all my dad will own so i know some history haha. So next time for see a ford diesel dont automatically call it a Stroker hahahaha

I think it was like $80 a gallon? I forget. Youd have to look it up. Had it for maybe 3 years after with no rust problems. Frame was coated in surface rust before we painted it to.

It's designed to stop rust.

Your right man, it isnt a powerstroke, lol. Its a 91 model truck, so its just a diesel. But Its funny, the engine in that truck seems to have had more torque than my dads 2004 F550 with the Turbo charged Powerstroke.

The '04 did have the 6.0L...what a piece that was....:chinese:

Yeah man them old trucks build good torque numbers, they had to cause they didnt have the turbo to save them. The newer trucks are designed to have nothing until the turbo spools which really sucks. We still have one of our old 6.9s and alot of times i would alot rather drive it than i would one of our 6.0s
