I'm going to say it would be a lot easier for people to suggest one if you posted the # of teeth sprocket you have now. :macho

Yeah, we need to know what year 400EX you have so we know what stock gearing is.

1999-2004 --> 15 front / 38 rear
2005-2008 --> 14 front / 38 rear

A common mod is to drop one tooth in the front to increase acceleration (low-end power) but you will definitely lose some top-end speed. I believe the gearing calculator equates the difference to be nearly 5mph, but personal experience says it feels like more than that.

The equivalent to going down in the front one tooth is to increase the rear by three teeth. Most people don't do this however because it may not clear a swingarm skidplate and it is more work to change the rear sprocket versus the front.

To balance on the speed loss with a 14 front I have thought about trying a 14/37 or 14/36 combo?

Well said. I tried the 14/36. I didn't like it so we went with 15/38 and still didn't seem to pull very hard to we went with the 14/38 we started the year with.

drop one tooth up front see how you like it then go from there fine tuning with the rear sproket
