IIRC, the Z400 shocks are about an inch longer than the 400ex shocks, and even the yfz450 shocks. They could probably be bolted on, but they will be too long. Could damage your ball joints and the front end will sit way to high. I wouldn't do it. Just get a set of yfz or 450r shocks and be done with it.

03-04 ltz shocks are the same damn shock as the 400ex. Look at them. Almost like they stole a sample from honda and made it.

Now, the 05-08 shocks shouldnt be any longer than the 03-04. But they're much better.

So the gas rezzy shocks from the Z should work on the ex.

i did a lot of research on this subject because i myself was going to do it. But then i ran out of funds.

i hear its an okay upgrade, but you mine aswell get 450r shocks (or yfz..)

the 450 shocks were one of the best upgrades i did.

hmm, I guess I'll have to go over to my buddies house and re-measure. He has an 05 z400, and I could have swore that his shocks, fully extended, were just about an inch longer than the yfz's that used to be on my EX. I'll check and re-post though, sorry for the confusion if they aren't longer.

That's because the YFZ shocks are about an inch shorter than the 400ex shocks...

Thats why people usually use 450r's.

The ltz shock should bolt right up, and those shocks (05-08) are much more capable and preform much better

So for just woods riding would a z400 shock be better and cheaper than a 450R
shock. Also are most people running the 450r shock stock or revalved. Because when people say get and bolt up the 450R shock are they talking about the revalve too or just simple buy a 450r shock and put it on a 400ex? I have been wondering and pondering about this for awhile now.

if you ride hard the 450r shocks are amazing on the front! but if your puttin around and kinda going slow I can feel they are stiffer and more rigid at slower speeds but I also cranked the rebound some so when I go fast the shocks wont pack up or anything when i had the rebound slower I tried driving slower and they felt more smooth than the 400ex shocks. so tune them for what you do more.

FoxHondaRider are your shocks stock or revalved 450r Shocks? If you don't have to do nothing to the 450r shocks beside tune them for yourself I might really think out it.

all stock 2005 450r shocks. If you get them get 2004 or 2005 if you can because they have a lighter spring so they arent as stiff

I got a set of 05 LTZ shocks that have a triple rate spring conversion and revalve by TCS, I havent had the bike going to ride on them yet but they fit up fine, im hoping they will be a nice addition.

awesome.

The 05 Z shocks are SOO much nicer. They're not as stiff as 450r's and are more plush, because they were made for the 400 class machine

So the 05 z400 shocks mount up with no modification right? And are they cheaper than the 450R stock shock? The reason I am asking is because I putt putt around in the woods and sometimes ride on dirt roads and fire roads. So I don't want to put a lot of money into this because I don't ride on a track and I really don't jump at all. So I don't think I would be using the 450R Shocks to there max potential. I am just wondering if it is worth it to change to the z400 shocks for casual riding in the woods and roads. Thanks for the advice.

i just soften upped my 450r fronts a little more I didnt have the compression set all the way soft i had it 1 turn away. Then I set my rebound all the way slow so I have a starting point for when i go riding next to re dial them in because i adjuted the preload a little. I will probally retune my rear aswell.

Yes, the Z shocks would be a nice upgrade.

They're about the same price as 450r shocks. But, whereas the 450r is designed a little more for racing, the Z400 is a trail bike. The shocks are more plush, and better suited for trails.

I dont race, so if i did shocks id opt for the 05 z shocks. I dont need aftermarket.

maybe after im done builidng the banshee, if I do decide to keep the 400ex, ill do the upgrade. I might look into selling it for a kfx450 though, or yfz.

i dont OWN a set of z400 shocks, but my buddy owns a 08 z400 and the suspension is so much softer, but he still doesnt bottom out on mx track. as long as he hits the landing ramp.
if i wasnt already lookin for some elkas i would definatly buy z400 shocks.
