View Full Version : Rider down! Kelsey had an accident

Kelsey was practicing at a local MX track for some practice before heading to Washington State for WORCS race in Aug. when she shorted a double .Kelsey is fine, but she REEEEALLYY done herself in on this one...
Kelsey has a very bad Clavical break, bad enough she may need surgery. She was on morphine while they done her X-Ray and was in alot of pain. we will hopefully find out tomorrow when she sees the Doc.
She also had to have 7 stitches in her temple and she tweeked her knee-AGAIN.

She is out a minimun of 8- 12 weeks. She is absolutely devastated since she races WORCS in 3 weeks. This will put her out of the points for a championship.
All I know is Im so glad she is OK. Shes a toughy and still wants to do what she loves. This freaked out Brandon pretty bad, he was pretty worried about his big Sis.

When we was on the way to the E.R she asked if her quad was OK.
The jump was tough on the lading ,but she was able to clear it smooth in practice, but BARELY.Surprising, her quad doesnt appear to have suffered any damage.
Troy caught the wreck on video, but it was brief so it didnt show the entire thing when it rolled over her.
We will still be traveling for the next race ,but Kelsey will be there to cheer everyone else on.
Kelsey could sure use some cheering up.:ermm:

Im confident had she had a 4- stroke or just a bigger quad in general, she would haved had the means to clear the gap. Torque was important since there was no way for her to gain enough speed to hit it in 4th.
This track they raced a few weeks ago, but this time they reversed it and the lip actually is about a foot taller than the take off, this was what I was worried about because if you short it, your going to get thrown or over the bars.

Here you can see the landing height vs the take off.

Shes worried about some scarring to her face.:(

I think they stitched her pretty good,so hopefully it will be minimal.

I think this is going to be a very long week ,sleeping was really hard.
I may also end up having her Doc look at her knee, the E.R. didint seem as concerned about it since she could walk But its hurting alot today. When I ran up to her her leg was bent back so she may have torn something.

Dad done a full inspection on the quad and everything looks pretty good!

The only thing he found was the tire was off the bead in the rear from the hit. Looks like one of the levers is what probably what cut her face when it rolled over .

Does anyone know exactly what they do to the bone if she has to have surgery?
Iv heard they very rarely do that, but didnt know how they set it??
Thank God for E.R's but Ill feel better when a specialist sees it to determine what to do .

Tell Kelsey I hope she recovers soon! Make sure not to get back on the horse (quad) too soon. Last thing she wants is a chronic injury that never really heals or goes away!!!

With having a drop in the races who knows...maybe she'll be good to go by Sept... Never know til the end of the year once all the races have taken place and the points are tallied up!!

Surgery just depends on what they do. It depends on how bad and where she broke the bone. I think sometimes they will drill a small hole in both bones and then wire them together. Something like that.

Most people I know that have broken their collarbone they are left to heal it out without surgery!

See you guys in Washington!

The space in between the break was so big that they had to
X-ray her twice to make sure it wouldnt punture a lung,so that why they thoguht she might need surgery.
Her points will be effected with the ones who will be finishing up the season.
Jerry, we talked about he braces tonight actually.. we want both kids racing with one, I agree 100% she shoud get it ,but finances have been tight, very tight... with Troys job changes, its been tough to get right now . I hope to be able to swing them both one soon.

Wow Kelsey, that looked like it was one heck of a get off! Looks like you were lucky to have only broken your collar bone. I wish you a speedy recovery.

I myself just started wearing a leatte brace this year and recommend one for anybody that rides as hard as you. When you consider the cost of hospital care then the money a brace cost sounds pretty cheap.

I'm sure as a girl your especially worried about a scar on your face. No body wants one thats for sure, but don't sweat it, that'll be your reminder of that crash. Without a scar it would be forgotten over time, but with a scar you'll tell this story the rest of your life. So thats kinda cool.

Good luck at the races. Hope to ride with you at the Proving Grounds someday.

WOW!! Looks like you had quite the ride Girl! Hope you recover quickly.

07-20-2008, 08:21 PM
See this is why girls shouldn't be allowed to ride quads, j/k. :D Hang tough, don't be worried about points, James Stewert was considered the best even though he crashed and wrecked out of the first three seasons or so of supercross. You don't have to be #1 points to be #1 rider out there. I'd reccommend you find the owner of the track though and ask about a sign by the jump, after a crash that gnarley you deserve to have the jump named after you.

I think she may sign on abit later but WOW.. shes quite the trooper tonight(prol cause shes stoned out of her gord from pain meds haha!)
Kelsey and her Dad went for a short walk around the block and went to rent a few movies to watch.I also just bought Carpe Diem's latest flick,so so wont be too bored..
Shes a little irritable being on the couch all day. I think the toughest part is not being able to alot of things by herself like shower and get dressed-Im sure ya'll that have broke there Clavicals know what Im talking about.:p
I remember her Dad when he broke his ,it took about a month and a Cortizone shot later to get things moving better, but his wasnt quit as bad ,but shes really surprising us both by how well shes tolerating the pain!

That's a tough little chica.Broke both of mine , pretty much sucks, but scars are way cool, (look at me..j/k) Big props going for the double, nobody likes a sissy. Can't wait to see the Lugan fam and give them all a "GOOD GAME".
Seriously Kelsey, no one cares if your #1 in the points, only if your personality shines through, which it does. We all love you and are thankful you bring your dad,mom and bro along with you. Chin up little camper( even though your taller than me) you are getting your lumps over early in life when you heal quicker, not a bad thing. You use that wisdom next time out and hit stuff a little long, then work backwards and you will be lookn' back off the big ones in no time!

Tina,

I remember looking at pictures of Kelsey when she was little, which seemed not to long ago lol. What a beautiful young lady!Gets it from her mother, I know :)

Anyways, I know you said that finances are tight, but Im sure us here at atvriders forum would be willing to pitch in and help. I for one would be willing. I know that pride is a factor, but honestly, safety is key in this sport.

Let me know, and godspeed to Kelsey!

You are VERY kind and genorous to offer you help, thats goes a long ways with me .. ;)
I dunno what heck is up with this year, but damn... its sure been ROUGH!! Ill be glad when 2008 is OVER!:scary:

Thanks Timmy!!
Kelsey misses everyone and cant wait to see ya'll.We miss out extended quad family! :)
Its still going to be tough for her to watch the whole wk end.

Well, shes pretty stiff and sore today and starting to form a black eye. She def. looks like a toughy now!:p
Poor Brandon... this freaked him out pretty bad. HEs actually the one I would expect to have seen broken first, not Kelsey! lol Shes my Smooth rider,Brandon is my "all balls, no brains" boy,but talented at the same time. lol . They both have been hitting some pretty good air lately and I think both kids were getting just too comfy...Brandon has one more race here locally the week before WORCS,Im thinking we might bag it with the luck they have had ,3 out of 4 of us have wrecked and got hurt there . LOL
ITs a really cool track though!:blah:

I honestly wondered if this would make her want to hang it up. Alot of girls would.

That is very nice of you to offer, but you dont have to do that.
;)

We will just have to really buckle down this next racing season and go from there.
Having both kids racing is whats hard because they equally need the same things .lol

I just noticed something today I need to have the doc loko at also..
Her shoulder blade in the back is protruding quite abit more than the other. I dunno if that could be a dislocation or not, maybe the way her arm is bent or swelling, but I dont think so.. but it def. needs looked at.

The one good thing about needing that surgery is that it will limit complications later on.. Mine was bad, but just on the border of needing surgery so they left it alone. Now my shoulder pops, grinds and is just a bit lower and further back than the other one. And it formed a big lump :ermm:

I know how you're feeling, I absolutely hated wearing that sling! Stay tough, and I'm sorry to hear about the accident.

I couldn't take a very good picture of it haha, but I tried

Did they leave the plate in permanantly or take it out?

The told us that we may want to have it removed after it heals .

i guess becasue she is small framed and has little fat on her it will most likely be visible.

Im also worried about what coudl happen if you race with plates in yor body?? This worries me .
Insurance will not cover to have the plate removed, because its considered cosmetic unless it causes her pain I guess.

Thats why they are opting to do the procedure now.
The yalso told me its very common these days to operate on collar bones. I have never heard of anyone having it done, but they said they do several a week.!!

We have to make a trip to Utah this upcoming wk end.. I wonder how she will do on a 5 hour trip in the car.
Brandons a test riding new Suspension thats about to hit the market and we need to go.
Seems like the bumps driving seem to hurt her more than anything.
I asked he if she wanted to stay home-that was a DUMB QUESTION..haha!:p

The told us that we may want to have it removed after it heals .

i guess becasue she is small framed and has little fat on her it will most likely be visible.

Im also worried about what coudl happen if you race with plates in yor body?? This worries me .
Insurance will not cover to have the plate removed, because its considered cosmetic unless it causes her pain I guess.

there was never really an original plan on what they are gonna do. doc said he could leave it, or take them out. i guess in my case it doesnt really matter. although my aunt works at the same place as my doc, and they discussed having it taken out.

im a bit on the skinny side, and you can def tell its their. the screws stick up a little and you can easily feel the sharp tips...... good way to gross the friends out ;)

it causes me some pain if im wearing something heavy around my shoulders such as a back pack, but surprisingly i cant even tell its their when im racing or anything. it doesnt bother me too much, usually no matter what im doing

QJ, I didn't read the whole thread but I saw about you wanting Leatts for your kids. I had a horrible crash and my Leatt literally saved my life, I got in contact with Leatt and they have used my medical records and testimonial from the spinal surgeon I saw as evidence of it's effectiveness. Well in exchange for my help (well, my almost dying) Leatt sent me lots of stuff, one being a new brace. It's a size medium which may be too big, but if not you can have it. That crash scared me into quitting so I have no use for it.

Thats is very very generous of you to offer that to her!
I have no idea how sized run on the brace,my 1st guess would be that it would be too big, but I guess I could ask around maybe in the mini section and get some ideas from other riders?
Im sorry to hear you have quit, but TOTALLY understand .. being a parent keeps Troy and I having mixed feelings at times, and this last time, Troy said a part of him hoped she would tell him that she was done, just to spare anything else maybe more serious happening. She doesnt feel that way as of yet,but long term resutls I guess will determine more after the surgery. Ive heard some pretty scary stories of the surgery (such as the screws coming out of her skin, and nervedamage) I hope she wont be one of those . But I know others that race with lots of titanium . lol
Whatever she decides, I fully support her. She is like everyone in my house ,we all have that passion to ride and to race even more. I just want my kidds to be happy and smile and have a happy life.
Ill ask around and get back to you. ;)

Wow. I just caught this thread. That's a bummer. Kelsey shouldn't worry about a scar Tina, you and Troy will still have to fight off the Kelsey Admirers. Kelsey's such a great girl.

I'm looking forward to seeing you all as Straddeline. Let me know if there is anything I can do to help.

Shes not worring about it so much now .
I think Im worring more about the surgery that she is right now! lol
I guess thats just the Mom in me though. Shes BORED out of her mind right now more than anything, she even complained her knee seems to hurt her more today than her Collar bone. Not sure thats good .:ermm:

don't worry about the surgery. My buds here with me have more metal in them than a japanese car! They do a job that I would say is as rigorous as racing. The scaring shouldn't be too bad. In a way she can look at it like this, Dudes dig scars! Seriously though don't worry. Don't worry about having the plate and screws removed unless it creates a problem later. everyone I know still has all their hardware in them with no complaints.
Good luck and have a speedy recovery.
We are all wishing you the best.

quadjunkies-sorry to hear about this you guys have really had a hard year going for you. some info on the leatt you might want to know

the medium is for riders 16 and up and i believe she is about to that age so to get the small one would be a waste

they send 3 different size of pins with the medium brace (the standard, a large and a small)so there is room to grow into it.

also for the thoratiac support (the piece going down the back) there is a 10 degree (standard) and 17 degree (for really small riders) to make it fit comfortable, and the fact it is fully adjustable should be enough to find a way to make it comfortable for her,

now if your son has a few years before the 16 age area i would opt for the smaller brace for him

and if you post up your paypal im sure everyone here including myself will donate enough money to get them braces

hope the info helps if you go to the site you can watch the fitment video here is the link to it the videos are at the bottom:

hope she recovers fast

Kelsey just arrived home ,everything went well.
She has 4 screws and a small somewhat flexable plate that may or may not have to come out. He said its all in how much it bothers her .
She is hurting pretty good right now, even after them giving her a long lasting numbing.
She needs to have her shoulder looked at next week as well to make sure she hasnt torn anything, there is still ALOT of swelling and her shoulders do not match up . He did say that she should make a full recovery if she does what he tells her.

He also said she should consider switching to bikes .:ermm:

Shes not getting enough pain relief at home :(

adrenalinefreak

I know it might sound rather obvious or maybe even stupid but make sure she's not doing anything!!! The negative to pain medication is it allows you to feel a little better even when you are in extreme pain and the injuried area is still bad. For example, if you're numb you wont feel the pain in your arm/shoulder while trying to take a shower or put your shirt on yourself, even the slightest movements can be bad...especially when the meds wear off cause then you feel it!!

The first night I broke my arm in Monticello was the Women's B class and silly me finished the race after I broke it in the 2 lap. They gave me some pain medication and I was like its not that bad....then it wore off...lol

I would say take it really really easy and the pain wont be as bad in the end!! Kelseys strong so I'm sure she'll be back to herself in no time! At least it didn't happen during the school year!!

Listen to the doc too....don't want any chronic injuries, especially with the shoulder.

As for quads being more dangerous....in some ways doh, the quad is bigger and weighs more. Not to mention they always seem to find you. Dirtbikers get hurt more I think! Limbs are out there more. I'll let you know. I supposed to ride one for the first time this week. We'll see if it happens. Might race one this weekend.

But thats something we all know!! I love my quad and racing it. kelsey is a great rider and she can come back stronger from this!

See you guys in a couple weeks!! i feel like its been forever since the last race!!

Tylenol 3 help me cope with pain.

Some of the pain med stuff makes me very pukey sick too. :scary:
Shes taking Phenergan with it as well to help that.
That would suck to puke for her right now .:huh

She lucked out ,got her FINALLY to rest so she didnt have to go back to the Hospital. She has to stay medicated literally all the time for the next couple of days . The dr was shocked how fast the meds wore off . Ill be glad when she doesnt have ot be on them so much, I dont like her taking all the pain med stuff for a long period of time . Im just glad shes a little more comfortable now ,that was stressful seeing her hurt like that . :(

I'm supprised he's supprised.

Higher metabolism will process through any medication faster. And a young teenage athlete (especially younger athletic girls) have a MUCH higher metabolic rate than a sedentary 40yr old desk jockey.. lol. Not to mention that Monster Energy drink she likes so much has a lot of diuretics in it and probably causes her kidneys to go into overdrive.. lol.

Stress increases blood pressure as well which will hinder the effectiveness of any pain killer.

As much as she likes it, she knows its not good for her to drink too much, so she stays clear of all energy drinks now .

don't worry about the scar on your head, I played hockey for 24 years and I lost count how many times I had to get stitches on my face from pucks and high sticking. They all fade away and I barely notice them anymore.

Looks like my essesment was right...
He thinks she also broke her Shoulder Blade or chipped it.
Alot of the time those have t ojust heal o nthere own, but it might be also out of place.
She goes back in in a week to have that X-rayed to make sure.

she busted herself up good this time. atleast shes getting some of the harder injuries out earlier in her carrier. make sure when she gets better(when the doctor says its ok to move that arm and the knee is better) get her on a sationary bike to get that endurance back up.

79400ex

That broken shoulder blade could be as painful as the collor bone. I dislocated by collor bone in 96 and couldn't move it for a week. I then went back to work before it was heeled up which was a big mistake.. So don't let her push herself to hard to get back.

Shes headed back to see the doc again tomorrow for some new Xrays to see hows shes healing.

Even if the doc says it's ok, which he shouldn't, but if he does I wouldn't let her ride..

Being young she heals faster but I would give it a little more time before going and stressing it out. Samething with broken arms and stuff just cause they feel better doesn't mean they are...

Quick update~~~

Now that Ive had a chance to catch up ...Just thought Id do a quick post and tell you Kelsey was able to race WORCS Round 6,and although she didnt ride very fast , but she still didnt come in LAST!!!:D :blah:
She rode smart and just wanted badly to participate and try to represent with the Team, so we met her in the middle on this one and she done fine, just abit stiff ,but kept it mellow. She was content with that and just lovex being out there.
She will race again next wk end at the same track she wrecked on (YIKES! lol) and will be doing some motor testing the next couple races on the motor a member here built for her to try out.
Next WORCS race is in two weeks and I think she will be about 80%.
I think shes out in points, but Im so happy shes still able to get back out there and do what she loves so much.

Check out the scar now!
Not bad for being about 5 weeks ago!!
The only thing that really hurts when she touches it is around the plate is some sensitivity to a nerve and the opposite end of the clavical hurts some.
