How well do your guys's ER's start? mine i have to pump the throttle 3-4 times and it will start after about 5-8 seconds when cold. If hot it has to crank for awhile before it starts? Just wondering if anyone else has this problem......? Thanks

Mine takes a couple seconds to start as well. I race XC and if I kill it, it takes it a few seconds to start back up.

My 06 was the same way. Best bet is to add a kicker. Mine drove me so nuts I traded it in for a 07 kicker and would never go back.

i don't know...ask the guy i sold it to because i got tired of sitting on the trail after every one else was out of sight

Yeah, definitely sucks to start most of the time.

Was told by the service manager to put on the choke and pump it two times. It def seems to work most of the time. But between real cold and real hot it does blow goats.

If its cold it fires right up. If it is warmed up it takes a couple seconds. The starter and battery are way to wimpy.

Mine starts fine cold or hot, choke it to start it cold and if i kill it in a race and it's hot it fires right back up but i also keep my battery on a tender when not in use so the battery is always at full peak.

All I do is keep mine on a tender as well, and it will roll start hot or cold. What helped mine to start easy was the R&D Powerpump.

i think that is one important key that most don't do, is keep the battery on a tender. a strong charged battery will get you a better start everytime.

mjne was on a tender 24/7...didn't help at all...after a valve and DECOMP adjust, it was better...but still not good enough for me...

how do you adjust the decomp and what is the r&d pump?

mine starts great, patience is key, if you get in a hurry and don`t think about what you are doing, you will be frustrated quick.

valve adjustment is important, tending the battery is an ok idea, though I never out mine on the box, but I am happy with the way it starts currently.....

I would never go to a kicker only again, I got spoiled on my cannondale, I love my 450er even more, but I do wish it had reverse.

Mine starts fast...but I've done a little wiring modification:cool: My kicker was faster until I did it though.:chinese:

Mine starts great. Still has the original battery on it that came from the dealer. I have had to charge it about 5 times total, and that was during the winter. I usually pump the throttle 2-3 times, turn the choke on, and start it. If it doesnt start after about 5 seconds, I wait about another 10-15 before I try it again. Keep you decomp and valves in check and you should have no problem. And never give it gas while hitting the starter button.

where and how do you adjust the decomp??

Mine is a kicker but it will usually start on first kick if the motor is cold with choke on or if it's good and warmed up but if I kill it before it's had a chance to warm up completely which takes at least 10 minutes it's a nightmare to get started again. Usually just have to let it sit for another 10 min or so before it'll even try to start.

Honda just needs to come up with a new design. It just doesn't work very good, period. I love not having the ER. Nothing to worry about with my kicker. It just goes and with the Rekluse it is one of the fastest setups out there. After trying all kinds of stuff the ER will never be close to my kicker, unless a kicker would have been added. I like not having the battery and extra wiring.

Engine is stock 06 w/HRC cam 168main, 48 pilot i believe a 55leak jet and HRC needle on the 4th clip with a K&N filter and air box lid and BIG GUN exhaust, I think the main problem with these is lack of maintenance to the valves and decomp lever, i check my valves every 5hrs so thats like 3races and a few practices thrown in there as part of my regular maintenance of oil changes, a/f cleaning and regular inspection of suspension and such, good maintenance is key to a healthy running machine cause if you DNF for something stupid it's no one elses fault but your own.

2 batteries ran in series. It sends 24 volts to the starter, making it turn over twice as fast.

I run duals so she will start in gear with the clutch out. Faster off the line for xc racing. You gotta do some other mods to make this work as well. 24 volts only to starter.

I thought about that, but figured it would put too much strain on the starter. I tried it once. Man you better be ready when you hit that button :p

Strains the starter gear, yes, but there is a trick for that. How much is a holeshot worth?

I was the first that I know to do the batt mod and I have been running it for 2 years...no problems

He's talking about starting without the clutch pulled in.

I rode a 07 450er, it didn't want to start. You could hold that starter for minutes. I was really wishing it had a kicker. I rode some kicker 450r's, they start very easy. I don't understand why people need electric start. I don't trust them, I would never buy a ONLY electric start bike. A guy I know, his starter has problems, always has to pull started, hates it. The shop that I'm having some custom chassis's done, has a parts list of everything you need to add a kicker to a electric start. Cost for parts is something like $400.

Set the decomp clearance to about 60 and it should go without hassle, even with high performance mill.

The tricks I have for the 24 volt starter aren't out there for everyone. Sorry shop rules. But if your quad made it into the shop......
