I took my son out to practice today and we ran into issues with both of his bike as the day went on.

First issue: He was riding his 50 and he jumped a small jump and when he came down his bike just died. I pulled it over to the truck and I was not getting any spark. After checking it over I found his plastic part that the spark plug plugs into was broke. Then I found the wires that come out of the motor on the water pump side were somewhat damaged. They were not cut in half but some of the internals where showing. I fixed the wires and then put a new boot over plug and still no spark. This is a new one for me. Where should I start first?

Second issue: He then went out to ride his 70 for the second time and it started running terrible. Idle and mid range were great but wide open it was an absolute pig. It got worse the hotter the motor got. It acted like it was running very rich. I dropped a jet size and then another and then another and it never really got any better. At that point it started acting lean at WOT... So, I went the other way and it didnt get any better and even got worse the higher I went. I played with the needle and nothing seemed to help. I even tried the cdi off of his 50 and it did the same thing. Like I said this was his second time out on it and it ran like a raped ape his first time out.

Any help would be much appreciated!

on the 70 - Are you running coil/stator or PVL?

I start with your stator. I'm not very familiar with the drr , but the wires coming from your engine are most likely from your stator. If bare wire was showing and got crossed, I think it's possible to short out your windings.

I had an old skidoo that used to do what your second item says. Turned out to be vapor lock when it got hotter outside.Does it start back up and run o.k. when it cools back down ?

Just the stock coil/stator.

That is kinda what I was thinking... I am just trying to rule everything else out before I go and buy a stator.

On the 70 seen it before and chased everything and it turned out to be a loose stator. Also seen the coil be bad and it get worst as it heated up.

I have a stock stator and coil in my box of take of stuff when I added PVL

My first guess would be stator on the 50 and coil on the 70. Good thing is you can swap parts from each other b4 you spend $

Just now experienced the no spark on my daughters viper 50.

Here's the funny part......chased everyhting and never watched the stator side while checking for spark cause it's easier to hit the start button and look for spark from the plug, on the other side of the quad.

Decided to check volts while starting and noticed the magneto wasn't spinning just kinding jerking.......key was trashed.

problem solved:rolleyes:

good luck

Ok, I I just put a new stator on the 50 and still no spark. Could it be the aftermarket kill switch? The stock kill switch?

I have seen the factory pull cords go bad pretty quickly. You can follow the wires from kill cord down under nose piece and unplug them and put the two wires together without hooking up kill cord wires and try it. If it works you'll know it was the switch. Good luck.

Jacob's went out this past weekend. He was riding and it just died. Wouldnt re-start. I wiggled the kill switch (the red 'plunger' on the handlebars, not the actual wires) and it started up. With it running, I wiggled the plunger again and it died. It stayed running the rest of the day....we left it alone.
