01 warrior trans popping out of gear

i just purchased an 01 warrior from a friend for $300.00 because it is having some transmission problems.he told me that when you ride it,it will shift thru the gears but if you get on it and then let it coast it will pop out of gear.i haven't taken the motor apart yet to see what is wrong but he already took it out of the bike.has anyone ever ran into this problem?i am hoping that it is a shift fork problem,but am looking for other suggestions.i probably won't get it tore down for another week because i am going out of town.but i plan to dig into it soon.
