Can't go wrong with a .270 that fits what your lookin for pretty good.

.270 is a classic...and suitable for most big game in North America

However, it would help to know what will be the animal you intend to pursue the most. And if you intend on target shooting alot, certain calibers and weapon platforms offer advantages over others (ammo price, initial cost, etc) .270 ammo is slightly higher then say 30-06 and not available usually in every location. Bullet weights arent as flexible either for the 270 wethere you handload or not.

How big are you? Does recoil bother you? What is your comfort range as it relates to distance and shooting effectively? A 22 travels along way, be more specific...lol

I am 6 foot 1 inch and 215 pounds.
i will be hunting deer and moose with it. Recoil does not bother me i have shot the barret .50 cal several times, cost of ammo means nothing to me( very very cheap here on base). i just want a gun that is fun to shoot and will drop a moose.

for range i will be shooting anything from a 300 yards to 1000 yards

30-6 or 30-30 the 30-30 is prolly a little cheaper for the ammo, but ammo is getting higher and higher as we speak, you can get a new 30-30 for 600 bucks and then pick up a used 22 for 250 300 for a nice one thats what i did.

I got a Kimber M84 in .308, pick her up for 900 bucks at a gun show in Harrisburg last year. Havn't shot it yet but we do own other Kimbers. Probably the best rifle I've ever shot. Real accurate and well made.

a 30-30 wil not be accurate at more than 200 yds, if i were you i'd go with a .270 or a .308, both have plenty of power and range for what your lookin for. both are easily available, and ammo isnt that bad for either. i own both and i wouldnt trade them for anything, the .308 has a little more range than the .270, and accuracy is excellent on both of mine.

Savage makes one hell of a rifle for out of the box accuracy. I'm shooting a .223 Savage Predator Hunter.

Shooting 55 gr. Hornady VMAX's will hold right at about a 1/2 in. at 100yds. With 68 gr. Black Hills match hollow points, I can cover the group up with a dime. May think about a Savage 10FV. The accu-trigger is an adjustable trigger and can be set to your needs. Makes for a decent shot aswell.

I also own a Remington 700 chambered in .30-06. One hell of a gun too. I shoot under an inch at 100 yds. with 150 gr. Winchester Silvertips. I put a Simmons scope on top of it and that was a mistake. Whatever choice you make, don't skimp on optics. Spend atleast as much or more on the optics as you did the gun. For what you want, a Remington 700 is a GREAT rifle within your price range. I would look at .308, .30-06, or a .300 Win Mag. The .300 Win Mag would be what you'd want for knockdown power. ZeroLogic also suggested the Kimber. Another solid choice. Very solid shooting, well made guns.

The .308 is a great caliber aswell.. Alot of long range rifles are chambered in .308.

Don't forget in that price range to think about good optics. I can't stress it enough if you plan on shooting long distances. Take a look at Sightron for a scope in your price range. They make good equipment and back it up with a lifetime warranty.

Hope I helped you.

i have a 7mm-08 and wouldnt trade it for any other gun in the world!!!! i love it. i shot my deer this year at 800 yards with it to the neck. VERY accurate. pretty fast it dont really kick. i reload all my bullets and i load them really hot... probably too hot. the case necks turn orange. ive killed everything from squirrels to rabbits to antelope to whitetail to mule deer. the only elk ive ever shot i forgot my gun and all i had was dads 300 weatherby. but a 7mm-08 you will NOT be disappointed at all. the 7mm-08 is a 308 cartridge necked down to a 7mm lead. for target shooting i use 160 gr boat tails for big game like deer and elk i use 175 gr boat tails for more knockdown power. and for varmints i use 140.

I use a Browning A-bolt hunter 30-06 for dear, and my dad uses a Remington model 700 in a .270. Both have Leupold VX-I scopes and we couldn't be happier. Both shoot well and are good quality.

400exstud, does your browning have the BOSS system on it? The A-Bolt with the BOSS system is a sweet rifle. Browning makes a real good gun and you couldnt go wrong with a Leupold.

Savages shoot soo damn nice out of the box but i still love my remington 30-06.

Hell just go with a good old Remington 870 Super Mag, yes its a shot gun but its more fun to hit a deer at 30 yards and miss than to hit a deer at 300 yards lol

Because I was already over budget, I chose not to get the BOSS. I have a friend who has it and he likes it but says it is REALLY loud. I am glad that I went with the Leupold, though!

I'll second the loud part. They are extremely loud. The next scope I buy will be a US Optics or a NightForce.
