mine makes the same noise in 2nd.
like when i start from a dead stop in 2nd, as soon as i let go of the clutch its clicks a couple times. then stops after my rpms get higher. i dont think its nething to worry about. the 400ex is naturally a noisey quad

sounds liek a gear without a cog to me..

does it pop out of gear sometimes?

My RM did that. it would make a really louddd click but you could feel it too...

you could drive in the gear but it would click like a SOB

till one day the gear cracked and the cog got lodged in between 2 gears and i thought the motor locked up... boy was i scared.

My dirtbike clicks in first gear. I just ride it anyway, but I don't stay in first gear long.

Are you talking when you go from neutral to 1st or 2nd? A small click is pretty normal. If its clicking while riding that doesn't sound good.

sounds like a gear missing a tooth to me.

like i said i did that to my RM...

it was drive able and on the way home i hit this double and my theory is when i hit it the tooth waws laying in the bottom of the tranny and the force from jumoing sent it upward only to get lodged in between 2 gears..

Drain yor oil ASAP and see if it comes out...

you def should split the cases and get it fixed before it gets worse.

ours did that, and it ended up being a bent shift fork.

if you dont catch it soon enough your engine will suffer,

mine only does it when u let go of the clutchin 2nd. could that be the shift fork as well? wat could the damage be?

im no transmission expert by any means, but its possible.

lets take my old 400 for example,

it started clicking , said screw it, kept riding, one day it locked up, the end of a shift fork broke, therefore circulating through the motor, destroyed the cylinder, piston, almost every tranny gear, intake valves and i could go on,

just saying when something goes wrong fix it before it costs serious money

yea def just fix it. a gear is like 35 bucks and shif forks arent much more a piece.

i needed shiftforks too in my bike cuz it kept jumping out of gear. i didnt care tho it only had to last me one more race then i dumped if off to a motor builder for 600 bucks , he redid it and sold it for 2 grand

fix it now , or forever hold your peace
