what does it mean to have your head ported and polished. what actually does it do and does it help

well they either cleanup all the rough casting flaws or they bore your ports making them bigger for more airflow and then they polish them to a shine, not sure if its only the exhaust to prevent buildup or carbon or what. A few others could probally give more information on it.

so if i get a 11:1 piston and hotcam stage 2 should i get it ported and polished

its not really neccesary and unless you get a bigger bore, aftermarket exhaust and possibly a carb. Even then its never neccesary but it gives you power thats available thats restricted with higher performance vehicles.

Remove your carb boot from the head side. That's where they would polish and potentially "port" to a larger dimension. You can see rough spots and scoring on mine.

They "port" the head so more air/fuel mixture can flow through the head and also if done right, it can also increase the speed of the flow too. When they polish it, the air/fuel mix flows straighter into the cylinder, otherwise the flow would be rough or slow.

Can I clean up the casting flaws by myself? I have a dremel.

Uhm when you get a port and polish only the exhaust side gets actually "polished" they keep the intake somewhat rough to help with blending of air and fuel. some shops actually shoot a glass bead at the intake side to roughen it up a bit

I wouldnt suggest doing a dremel job to a bike thats actually worth money..

I did it to an old school cR project that i had. i changed the powerband alot and i was impressed with what my dremel could accomplish.

but doing it to a bike that is actually worth more than 600 bucks is a different story.

you could get rid of casting flaws. bit i wouldnt go much farther than that...

and if you do do it. make sure you clean the cylinder realllly well afterwards
