what is better for racing and riding in the woods, the Honda 250R or 400EX? this all assuming they would have the same suspension mods?

thanks for all the help guys...

I have no clue. I think that the 400 would be better for wet, tight woods, but the 250r would be better if the trails were dry and a little more open. It's a tough decision though.

They are both very good for the woods. The 4-stroke works much better on wet days. They are probably pretty much the same except the power difference. I would go with whatever you are experienced with.

It depends on your riding style! I never really felt comfertable on the 400 but I know guys that would take a 400 over an R anyday!
If your pretty new to riding the 400 would be easier to ride.

i have ridden both and really like the power of a built 250r. however, the 400EX does have some strong point too.

i guess i am needing to ask which one handles better and has better woods power. i am a very aggresive rider also. i figure that would make a difference.

also Jeff i will be calling you in the next couple of days about some of your XC 250r quads. me and a buddy are comin to E-town and may ride up your way.

you can't go wrong with either one, but if your more expereinced than maybe you should get the 250R

I think a thumper is better in the woods. YOu need all the traction you can get going up them huge hill climbs, deep water crossings and mud holes. I've rode both 2 strokes and 4 strokes in the woods..I thought the 2 stroke was the only way until I got a thumper,,no doubts in my mind the thumper is better..IMO

If you haven't picked one up yet, you will probably be able to get a better deal on well equipped 250R than the 400 but like everyone else says they both have good XC qualities

i have not picked one up yet, but have looked at several of both. it seems like you can get a full race ready XC quad for around $7500.

i have found more 250R quads to my liking but i alway have something like Brandon Ballances 400ex on the back of my mind too. heck you can pick 2000 up 400EX's up for $3000 now.

it looks like i am gonna have to add up the pros and cons of each and see wich one looks better after that.

IMO, there is no quad compareable to the 250R!!!!

I raced a 250r in Xc for a couple of years. Axis shocks,Ct 310 motor, and lots of other mods.Last year I switched to a 400Ex and never regreted it. The R is a good quad but it is so old. All the stock frames I see in XC crack constantly. The 400 is way easier to ride fast for most riders and Parts are so much cheaper. Not to make the R guys mad but, the only real power difference is that the 400 has 3 or 4 times the bottom end power.

is there any big difference in the weight between the two? i had every intention of getting a LRD aluminum frame (assuming i buy a 250r and it doesnt already have a race frame) when the stock frame bites the bullet.

what is the difference between the riding styles between the two? i know you are able to put around easier with a 4 stroke, but that is about it.

LRD is making the attitude frame for the 400 also

a 400 has a good 35lbs of weight stuck to its self over the R, personally, a good R IMO is better in EVERY SINGLE type of riding, cept MABE longterm reliablity, but blah, get the R, or either one, ul be happy

um for racing through the woods look at what the pros are runnung R's. the 400ex is a great bike for riding and racing i just would go with what has worked for the rpos. also have you considered a cannondale blaze? they are great bike too. just ask jeff

Ryan

Well most of the pro's are using R's is because they give out alot more power then the 400ex's do. But they are also better I think

i have ridden a blaze, and they are very nice, but $10K??? i think that is way over priced.

heck for $10k i can buy Johnny G's full aftermarket 250r and have $1000 left to play with.

i think i have decided to get a 250r, they seem to have more parts available, and i can get a nice one for fairly cheap. i just have to decide now how much i want to spend on one up front and what i want to do to it once i get it.

thanks for the help everyone....:D

ok i just thought i would through it out there. or i would consider getting a stock bike and modding it to your preference whether it be 250r 400ex or cannondale whatever just so you know what was exactly done and how it was done

IMO...there are certain things to consider for racing
availability of pcs/parts
cost of rebuilds
weight of machine
ease of repairs/maintenance
The R excels in these 4 points... again IMO ..

300EX is not even close to an option. they feel to small for me.

12-07-2002, 09:35 AM
300ex ..hhmmm,..maybe a for a young rider ...or a novice ...
BTW,I have seen some nice ones at the races ..

Dude, don't compromise anything, just buy a Z400. Think of it as a 400ex with a better motor. Suzuki copied the ex geometry and put in a better motor so you wouldn't have to. That is why you can buy 00 400ex's for $3000. Wait until next season in the GNCC series and see what everyone is running in Pro Production.

why not get an R, with the exact same frame, cept with slightly diff frame rake, and hav a better motor than both of them?

The ltz400 will be one of the most popular choices out there for the following gncc. In MX though as far as I know doug gust is the only one using the Z-400 and he is really using the drz400 engine. Probably becuase it puts out about 8 more hp. Most of the pro's are still mostly using 250r's or crf450 quads.

YEA, I LOVE THESE ADS THAT SAY DOUG GUST RACES A LTZ400. GUST RACES A LTZ400 AS MUCH AS MARK MARTIN RACES A FORD TAURUS! :D

At the races ive been in, it is all but maybe 5 hondas outta 70 quads, 5 r's and the rest 250x or 300ex or 400ex, im getting a 400 so maybe i can do a bit better with that power and suspension.
