crf cam chain problem

I'm in the process of putting my new crf cam chain on and I think I have a problem. I have the chain in and everything and my problem is when I put the tensioner on, the chain is very, very tight. There is no free play in it at all. The engine will spin and everything but I don't think it's supposed to be this tight. The tensioner is backed out all the way too. Can anyone give me some suggestions?

counting the links in both chains would be a start

well when i had both chains side by side they were pretty much the same length except the old one was stretched a little bit so it was just a touch longer.
