my moms company is getting rid of their 04 chevy sliverado 2500 2wd used for hauling big crates full of all different sorts of stuff has 130,000 miles and 98% of them are highway miles they asked my mom if she wanted it or if she knew some one that wanted it since she works there they will sell if for 1,700 bad part only gets around 9mpg (does that sound right for highway?) this truck is nice looking im not a chevy man but when i herd 1,700 i said y not. im still kinda of thinking about it but what gears could i put in it to give me better mpg and also what was the biggest engine that came in that year and model ?

do you guys think i should go for it

my guess would be a 5.3 vortech or a 6.0 vortech for the motor. 9mpg is aweful. it MIGHT be possible it had a 454 but i doubt it. probably has an automatic transmission. and really low gears.

it's an lq4 motor. 6.0L, 364ci, unless it's got a duramax, which i'd buy in a heartbeat for that price, even with the weaksauce 9mpg.

the gas mileage sounds a little low, but was that calculated over time with multiple large payloads being carried? highway mpg is usually in the mid teens in these trucks with gas motors, but the epa does rate these trucks at 10mpg overall and only 11mpg on the highway.

Surely you didn't mean 1700.
Anyway, it is possible to have a larger motor. I have heard of the 502 finding it's way into a 3/4 ton if it was ordered that way. If it's your mom's work, surely you could go pop the hood and look.

some friends of ours have an avalanche 2500 with the 8.1.. they said they never get over 12 mpg no matter how or where they drive.

i got a smallblock 350 in mine and it gets about 12 city...even worse with a trailer. they have alot of weight in that thing judging by the pic....i would jump on that thing. it is a nice truck and looks well kept.

forgot about the 8.1. it was offered on the avalanche between 2001 and 2006 and on the silverado up until 2008.

The 2500s can come with a 6.0, 8.1 or 6.6 duramax. That truck, surely has a 6.0 in it being 2 wd. the 8.1s come in anything 4x4, or 2wd longbed CC. The 6.0 is bulletproof, and loves to tow, at least mine does. Being 2wd, you probably have a locking diff with 373s or 410s, you can put 342s in it, and it will increase mileage in it. I have an 03 6.0 with full exhaust, cam, programmer, 410s and 33s, and towing i get 13mpg 17 highway..... its very doable, and all around good truck.

for 1700$ tell your mom ill be over with cash in hand to grab that haha...
but anyway 9mpg doesnt sound right at all especially for 2wd with a 6.0 in it.

that just might be due to the wieght it has in it all the time ect i say grab it and see what you get MPG wise worst comes to worst sell it if you dont like it because at 1700 that is not a bad price at all

For $1700, I wouldn't even second guess myself. I would buy it on the spot.
