filter question

ok so i bought a used 04 trx400 and started digging into it. removed seat to get to filter and found one foam attached and another steel mesh looking one just layin in the air box. Any ideas. and man that foam filter feels oily. and is it safe to run without the lid for normal trail ridin?

Hey the sleel one is probaly the insert that goes inside the foam one to support it. The filter is should be oily, filter oil atleast. Yes its safe to trail ride with the lid off, as long as its jetted for that and you don't go thru alot of water that would get in there.

should i put that steel one back in? and do you think its the stocker?

I can't say if it's the stock one or not but if its an aftermarket one it should say the brand on it (Uni, Twin Air, etc). The steel one is probaly the stock cage that keeps the filter from collapsing. Take the filter off and see if anything is in it. I think some come with different cage but I'm not sure on that. Maybe someone else that knows more will chime in.

yeah im pretty sure its the stocker. they probably took that cage out to try to pull some more power. hopefully ill be fine without it and leave just the foam one on.

I'd put the cage back in. It will just go back in.
