need help getting 4x4 to work

i have a 1999 polaris sportsman. when the speedometer works the 4x4 works when the speedometer doesnt work the 4x4 wont work. now that my speedometer is completly shot i have no 4x4. everything else electrical works. i wanted to avoid paying $300 for a new speedometer,,, is there anyway i can bypass the speedometer,, or is there a cheap/used speedometer out there?

thanks, i just ordered a new speedometer we will see if it works. $317,,, man these things are expensive.

it wasnt the speedometer. i just replaced my old one and i still have nothing.. 1999 500 polaris sportsman with no 4x4 and no speedometer. everything else electrical works,, the headlights, tail light, and the gagues below the speedometer work. anybody have any ideas,, i assume its something electrial but where do i start?? i see the 5 point connector and the 3 point connector that go into the speedometer but they are extremely difficult to follow throughout the atv. need some help !!!
