just grinded and knocked off the nut for the fender brackets, your plastics will folp around unless you weld, or tie the brackets on with wire or something. I tried to JB weld them but I put it on too thin i guess and it snapped within 15 minutes of hard whoops.

YES!!! 450R shocks are a DREAM......I mean....there are better things out there......but suspension wise....this is the best cheapest mod you can do.....and it is a 200% increase towards the better!

yeap 450r shocks spend time tuning them for yourself before you start going crazy with new spings and saying they are crap. I tuned them and wow amazing. Stock settings with just the preload taken all the way to the softest spring rate and they were a huge improvement. I adjusted more and more and fine tuned and as they sit now it rides so good. So much better now I have to re adjust my rear. not only did the 450r shocks make the ride better but they made me faster and crazier without dying or ending up in the hospital. For the times they saved me already it was worth it. I can now do 5th gear pinned though the woods over small bumps and stuff without hopping around everywhere. Still could use a stabilizer but w/e. Jumping is a major thing it improved too. I can bottom them out its not that hard but I land so smooth on jumps with a landing it seriously feels like floating almost as if i have never left the ground when I land and all. Over jumps without a landing they feel smooth and if your nose dips where you basically crap yourself because you think your going over the bars... that fear is gone lol land on just the ront shocks and they absorb the impact and you ride off

leasureryan
06-30-2008, 09:23 PM
lol....true that....I landed straight on my fronts last week.....thought I was done for sure...hit so had....my bars bent all the way forward and touched my headlight.....but nope....didn't go over....shocks sucked it right up

Yes....I have the fat pegs....which come with built in heel guards, and new foot pegs(the whole thing all the way to the frame!). Best nerf ever. I seen a pair of those "Tusk" nerfs on an LTZ at work today. I stood on them, and they bend down and nearlt break....now I see why they are so cheap....because they are CHEAP!

the damage is actually way worse than it looks. You can't even see any of the lower stuff, or detail. It's pretty twisted up.

I think they are same....but honestly, I don't remember what the stokers are like...lol. I will tell you this though, being a way wider peg...it's like standing on a pillow....and wow, they grip great!

yeah they are floats, and i like them a lot. i rode on some elka tripple rates before i got these and i prefer the ride of the floats. best part is if it rides to rough, you let some air out. if it's to soft, put some air in. i'd recommend them for the price.

Dude... those wheels are siK!!!

Are they OMF or what?

And yeah, in my opinion you gotta have a link on the EX if you want the most out of it....

There is much more to it than ride height though... You need a reworked shock for it, or an aftermarket for it, as the link not only lowers it... but corrects steep swinger angle... and most of all corrects the progression rate of the rear end.

Save up until you can do it all the way around though.

That looks like a nice tire. But looks heavy.

400man
07-08-2010, 12:25 AM
I wouldnt waste the time with the pure sports bandit tires, all they do is spin once the sharp edge on the tread is worn, thats why I have em turned backwards. about all they are good for is medium-hardpack loamy dirt, anything else and they just spin like crazy. the tread blocks are very stiff and hard, that makes em last a pretty long time even with blacktop and asphault riding.

i'd much rather have a set of maxxis 6ply razrs for xc racing and riding.

MtnEX
07-08-2010, 01:18 AM
Well, the grooving is worn clean off of them.

If you want to keep sharp grooved tires until they are slicks... better invest in a groover...

wow I think thats the first time ive ever seen a pic of a brand new bandit rear tire, all the ones ive seen have looked like the ones I got, I didnt even know they had those grooves in the tread. and do they make a specific tool for grooving tires? ive done one set of razrs with a grinder with a thin cut-off grinding disc, kinda ofa messy job that I hated doing.

MtnEX
07-09-2010, 12:42 AM
Yeah, they make grooving tools.
Have for many years.

Back in the day this was the only means we had for getting our tires ready for different track conditions... because we didn't have all these tire choices.

What we did back in the day caused the birth of the tires and tread patterns you see today.

We used to groove and sipe knobs.... even cut them clean off in patterns sometimes. Whatever it took to make them work better.

How are the Stadium shocks and XRex tires?

guenther

Sorry MtnEX, I just saw your post. The X-rex tires are killer. I can pull through stuff that other can't just because of the aggressive tread. They slide great and last a long time. They are also one of the least expensive tires on the market for a 6ply. I just had my front Stadiums rebuilt by Nick at Jet Suspension and they are great. He took off the factory progressive springs and put on a dual rate set up, revalved for my weight and recharged them. I've already got ATV soft bars that flex so I wasn't worried about going to a triple rate. Going dual will also keep the body roll down just a bit. They are working flawlessly. My rear Stadium was done by Laz at GTT when I got my drop link. He also redid my stock 400EX but the Stadium is more "silky smooth" and you don't feel a damn thing in the back on the little bumps.

man you have very slick 400ex. how would you compare it handling wise to a 450 with aftermarket suspension?

Thanks. I couldn't tell you about a 450R as I haven't ridden one for more than 5 minutes and it was on a stock suspension. I do remember that the center of gravity felt lower (he had lonestar drop link), but that was before I got my front end down and GTT rear link. Right now my race/ride height is 7" in rear and 7.25" in front with me standing on the pegs. Mine handles like a dream now even with stock arms, however I'm sure it would be better with a long travel to soak up more of the bigger bumps. I don't want to go any wider because a lot of the trails that I ride and race are very tight and technical. My nerfs catch trees quite often and I'd rather it be them vs my tires. My plastics are starting to get a little dull so I think I'm going to pull out the heat gun to see if I can get some shine back in them. I'm a little anal about keeping it spotless and it tough to do riding XC. Peace.

The brands are linked (privately) in where they are made.

Seems like most guys prefer the GBC version.

Very much the same, just small differences like rubber compound...

How can the Clarke possibly hold over a gallon more than the IMS? Look at the size difference!

powerbomb400
03-26-2012, 08:01 PM
If you notice with the IMS the black side panels are on. With the Clarke the side panels are the gas tank. I believe the IMS hold 4.3 gallons and the Clarke is 5.5 gallons.

I did pretty decent on the start, like in the top 5 I think in the first turn and into the woods and on one lap I was in first place (forgot which lap but its on the gncc website on the race results).

A local guy that runs a bike shop got first place in my class. he even got me on film with his helmet cam out in the fields. Thats one thing im thinking about getting later is a helmet cam, I love watchin these vides from the race.

but yea it was a rough track, and i wish I was in better shape to ride faster without getting arm pump and stuff. but when I got to a open setion or the turns in the fields I was WFO

To answer you question, no i dont like it that tall. I like most others, would like a lower slung bike. Next on the to-do list is xc linkage to lower it some in the rear. As for the front, i dont know what to do. Adjusters are set all the way at the top. Bought the 450 shocks used with the dual rate kit and supposedly set up for 180lb xc rider (im 165 w/ no gear) so i may need to send them off and get them set up for my weight. I'd like it to be lower but not sure what to do in the front any ideas?

yea re-valved for your weight would help make it set a little lower. and are you running stock a-arms? +1 or +2 wider arms will help it set just a little lower,

shaggy01
05-16-2012, 06:08 AM
Yeah, i guess im gonna call up derisi racing and see what they can do.

Yeah, they're stock arms for now. GT Thunder or Alba arms are on the to-do list.

But yes, it is too tall for me. Though the ground clearance is a plus.

I see you got a Two Bros. slip on. Don't see many of those on 400's, whats your thoughts on it? Like it?

Got a deal on it so thats why i went with it. I was wanting a HMF but couldn't pass it up. So far, i like it. Throttle response got alittle better and seems to feel peppier throughout the whole powerband but nothing to brag about. It's pretty loud, doesn't really bother me but doesn't sound as good as the HMF. Overall though, i'd recommend it. and your right, i haven't seen any other 400s with one.

Here's my 05. Just got rebuilt by Bud Fischer, modded carb, Protaper bars, Acerbis handguards, 2" risers, ITP +1 offset wheels in the front, AC propeg nerfs, 13t front sprocket, and ITP GNCC's all the way around. Hope you like it! I also have brand new 2012 450r shocks on the way in the mail!

Bumping this thread because there are so many awesome quads on here, also wondering if anyone has been racing xc this year and what your results have been. Not to many xc events around here in Michigan, which sucks because I would love to attend and get involved in xc racing.

400man.... looking good. when did you pick up the elka's? i bet they improve the ride a little?

and is that a blue hood of an old ltr two smoke?

im switching to peg/heel gaurds only. I'm running the tusk pro-peg nerfs, and they are as flimsy as htey come and the heel guards have bent up and are scratchign the hell out of my plastic. so im done with that garbage.

one more thing, what is that in the backgound in the first pick?

400man
04-16-2014, 09:36 AM
thanks! yea ive actually got 2 sets of elka front shocks. those there have compression and rebound adj, the other set is just preload only piggybacks. that hood is from my old 250r I used to have a few years ago, I bought a cowled hood for it and found this blue one in my shed. I didn't want to cut my good fenders up for the hood, so I bought those yellow fenders for 50$ that were beat all to crap, but I healed them with my plastic welder, and now I have a extra set of "beater" fenders.

yea I ran the alba/tusk pro peg nerfss for a year or two, but they were beat all to crap and reall messed up, so I just runnin those tusk heel gaurds I had stored in my parts collection.

I guess your talkin about that go kart in the back ground? yea I had plans to build it into something to take on my trails, its got full suspension, and a straight rear axle. just needs a good motor and torque converter setup, the 6.5hp Tecumseh don't cut it lol.1718107914

05-25-2014, 05:41 PM
Yup they're 23/22. I bought the quad with them on it. They are awesome for my rocky trails tho. But I have to mess with the gearing a little bit I think now.
Have any suggestions for gearing?

Current mods are
elka stage 3 full suspension( haven't put on the rear yet)
Dwt champion in a box rear wheels with rokout fronts
Maxxis razr2 f/r
Oury grips
Full skids
Nerf bars
Renthal bars with risers
Streamline steering stabilizer
UNi filter

Future mods coming soon
Different front sprocket with new red chain
Red case saver
Front Bumper ( don't know which one yet)
Powermadd handguards red and black
Full yoshimura rs2 exhaust

Open to all suggestions on other mods
Lmk what you think

Stickman400

I just don't know about that hood. I know those are your crappy xc race fenders but that hood is just......ugly. Sorry. It just needs some plasti-dipping here and there and it would look sharp other than that hood. Or maybe if you plati-dipped it too....hmmm.

MtnEX
06-21-2014, 09:47 PM
Blue mud plugs and blue hood. It works.

But, I'm not one to knock the plasti-dip idea either though. It's not hard to try a color on something and go back if you don't like it. Black or red on the hood might make the blue stand out more on the mud plugs. I dunno.

Just curious, how many of you actually race xc/harescramble? I have a few questions about it since I'm tossing the idea around about trying my first harescramble this year and possibly the GNCC in NY.

I do the races that's close to me, I don't really travel very far a race though. they are a lot of fun and a great adrenalin rush, especially when theres a bunch of people watch and cheerin you on as you go up a big hill climb or big mud hole
