Well I've been thinking on what truck i should get with the money I will be making by the end of the summer. I'll have at least 5 grand to spend and want to know which one will be the best for the buck. It is deffinately going to be a midsize truck since i'm 16 and don't have a large paycheck for gas so it has to be pretty fuel efficient. I don't mean to count my chickens before they hatch just want to be prepared when the time comes. thanks in advance for any suggestions.

I'm a Ranger fan. I bought a 95 2 wheel drive, extended cab 4 cylinder 5 speed with 105000 miles on it when I was 15 and a half. Three years and 50,000 miles later, I got 2k out of it, which is what I paid for it. The only thing I ever had to do is replace the carrier bearing on the drive shaft from droping the bomb on it. It got 22 to 23 mpg pretty much no matter how hard I drove it. I miss it with these gas prices.

I'd take either a Dakota or a Ranger.

Big truck market is where it's at now days. You can get great deals on the big ones. Smaller ones is what everyones after now, hard to deal there.

Rangers also over here. I had a 95 2x4 4cyl 5 spd, great truck, drove it for two years, beat the heck out of it, got 23mpg driving WOT everywhere (still slow) and sold it for more than what I payed. I got a 97 4x4 4.0V6 after that, beat the heck out of that one, drove it on the thruway with mud tires for two years, and offroaded it nearly twice a week. Replaced usual stuff like leafs and brakes, but that truck never gave me any major issues surprisingly for how hard I drove it. Got a good job and bought a big truck that I take care of now! I would never hesitate to buy another Ranger. I agree toyotas are a good truck, but I think parts are cheaper and easier to find for a ranger.

get the ranger, you won't be disappointed. It has a very well proven mechanic, 2002 through 2006 I think the model was unchanged except little minor things. I own a manual 2006 b4000 4.0 v6 (basically a rebadged ranger) and I couldn't be more happy with it. The 4.0 v6 has the power when you need it, its really torquey, but don't get on the gas too much cause then it's a real gas sucker. Trust me, you'll have fun drifting on gravel roads with this thing !!

oh and one last thing... do NOT get the 3.0 v6, if anything get the 4 cylinder instead

I have a 92 S10. 187,xxx miles. 5 speed, 2.8l v6. It gets 24mpg with a mostly city driving. It will run forever if I keep changing the oil.

it has about 7hp and give or take 30lbs/ft of torque over the 4 cylinder, can't remember exactly the numbers but that's about it, and it sucks a lot more gas, that's why it's not worth it. Hell, they even took that engine out of their line up this year, must be for something ...
