ive got a 04 400 ex that im looking to wake up this coming winter and was wondering what you guys think of my ideas and what i can inprove on so far heres what i want to do

11:1 piston stock bore
cam (stage 1 or 2 ??)
port and polish
450r front shocks

i already have a hmf pipe and KNN power lid.

also what do you think will be the price of doing all of this will be with me doing the install.

after an 11:1 piston, hotcam stg. 1, port and polish, and the shocks, you'll probably be out about 800 bucks, not including labor to install everything.

well the engine like piston and cam will prob be like almost 300 idk how much it would cost 2 port and polish but i thought about doin the port and polish when i do mine but i,m goin 2 bore mine 2 a 406 and 10:1 with a stage 1 cam

THe cam is up to you. The stage 1 will give you more low-mid power while the stage 2 will give a better mid-top power. But keep in mind both are going to give all around gains over stock.

i might do the cam and shocks to start off with is there still gains from cam with stock motor

do the carb and cam.... fcr 39mm, and Id say the TC cam. i have the 926 grind on my 440.. it hits hard.

if you really want some power. i picked upu a 11:1 440 kit from wiesco and hotcams stage 2 with filter and sleeve with some snazy stickers:o for about $340. then to have the cylinder done was $225. then i got a motoworks slip on. that sounds awsome for $289. then my girlfriend at the time got me a jet kit for $60, then i got an outwears cover for $18 and some unifilters. 6 pack for 10. so for around...eeewww i just realzied how much ive spent lol 1000 you can have a killer engine that rips. i also did some side work on bikes. installing bore kits and repairs to fund this so its not that bad. if you dont mind the money its worth every minute

i wish i had the money lol mines done little by little but i hate winter cause i usually dont work since no grass 2 cut plus i,m in school so i cant work as much but it slows it down so most of mine is done in the summer but if ur like me little by little but alteast something is gettin done

lol yeah, im not to happy that ive spent that much money but i dont care. you only live once and im a modd junky. i dont even race. but i love looking nice and performing even better. so ill take the hit on that one.

you can actually lose power by doing this since the cam will keep the head open longer you will lose more compression causing a power loss. thats what the high compression pistons make up for, so i would save up for both at the same time

i have herd a lot about that happening thats why i asked

Well that depends. If you go with just a stage 1 hotcam, you should gain power from top to bottom. Any bigger than that you will probably start to lose some low end power.

read the big post about half way down he does a real good job of explaining how cams work.

^ what u dont understand though... a small compression loss ie .2 isnt going to hurt you especially when you increase the flow of the head
so overall you will definitely have gains throughout the rpm range
the dfference from 9:1 to 8.8:1 if everything kept the same would probably be around .1hp

you want a cheaper way to increase compression ratio.... buy smaller gaskets ( MMI student ) motorcycle mechanics RED RIDE!

i have a JE 11:1 stock bore piston, stage one cam, hmf exhaust, white bros rev box, and K&N filter on my '03 400EX and it beats YFZ 450's and 450R's no problem. beleive it or not, its up to you, but ive raced 3 different stock YFZ's, and beat them on dirt, tar, and sand, from a dead stop, rolling in any gear, etc... and a DS650 with a pipe and filter but he did pass me once i topped out

people dont give these old motors enough credit. especially since im only 11:1 compression on a 398cc air cooled motor beating 449cc liquid cooled 12.5:1? motors.

you beat 450r with that setup ?
