hey guys i am new to the hybird thing so i may ask some dumb questions. i just got a deal on a 01' 400ex frame and some misc. parts with it. i have been doing some harescrables and hard trail riding, thinking about racings some serious stuff next year. so i need a little more than my kawie. so what motors are best for xc racing? 426? 450? 600-650? also what is the power difference between 426 and 450? Whats best to go with yamaha, honda, kawie, ktm, suki, or what else. i want a four stroke so no 2 stroke ideas please some info would help. thanks

I've also been looking into a motor for my ex chasis. From what I've read, Yamaha YZ450f and YFZ450 motors seem to fit the ex chasis the easiest. Personaly, I'm leaning more towards an ATV engine cause either they have a batery start or a forward kick start. I dont see to many big bore quads racing cross country so I would say to look for a 450cc engine. Good Luck.

id say WR 450F motor...then youd still have E start and you can hook lights up to it..

If needed,
I have one kit left for sale.

It anchors the YZ400-426-450 engine into the Honda 400ex frame.

thanks for offering the kit but long travel suspenion for my kawie and a trip to the beach got me a lil tight on the cash for a couple months. also thanks for all the other input. so is their a major power difference between quad 450 and bike 450? and does a 426 hold up to them? Does anyone have a hybird quad setup for xc most the ones i see are for mx?

wont your kawie be faster than a ex hybrid? thought these new EFI 4 bangers were as good as it gets.... (2 strokes excluded :p )

as far as your mx versus XC question, i think its just a chasis setup of a-arm and axle width being narrower. same motor setup should work good for both (focus on low and mid range power)

this is coming from first hand experience, my 426 will beat quite a few 450 quads that are out right now. mainly i pull away in 3rd and 4th gear and keep pulling away. here is me racing a 04 450R with a FMF full exhaust, jet kit and filter. i was running a junk exhaust at the time, now since i got a good exhaust i can leave this guy sitting lol.

the kawie is fast, but i'm going to tell you guys the truth. all the 450 quads are about the same. none are way faster than the other its mostly bais when people talk. now i was out riding and a guy had a crf450 hybrid that thing was mean. he had about the same mods my freinds and i have pipe, filter, rejet or remaped. but that quad was powerful, and thats what i want.

estart adds what? 12 lbs or so? unless your going for land speed records i think you ok..

better yet get the estrt put yourself on a good diet/workout regimen and make up for the estart weight wise..

the point of hybrids is for more power and to save weight. this is why people mainly use hybrids for mx.

I have a lt250r and it has a yz426 motor in it as far as speed and power goes it seems to be faster than most of the 450s that i ride with. i do some pretty aggresive trail riding and i feel that it is plenty of power and can hold its own. If you were wondering power wise there is no problem. i dont mean this to offend anyone either but the yz426 motor does seem to be a little mmore powerful than a few of my buddies 450s do. my .02

dirtbike motors have lighter flywheels, different gearing, tuning, etc. get yourself a quad motor and set it up for the type of riding you intend to do.

you say you are going to race XC, what motors do you see make the podium 99% of the time? there is a reason most people are running 450s. Hondas are the most plentiful. they also have as much or more aftermarket support than most other brands.
