I am probably gonna start racing MX in a local series next year and i will probably only have about $1000-1500 to spend on parts. Ill be getting a new quad soon (probly a 450). so Im not sure what part i should buy for MX. Obviously an exhaust, nerfs, kill switch are a must. i plan on a full system. but im kinda stuck on the other things i shouldnt go without. if i buy some Elkas then im broke. i still wanna be able to just ride trails too so im not gonna be doing any serious racing yet. so any suggestions on what i should buy and should stay away from would help alot.

New tires would make a big difference. If it was me I would buy like an '06 or '07 that already has some parts on it;)

well, if i was you, when you get a 450, take your stock shocks and send them to someone like C&D racing (a site sponsor) and get them revavled, and that will be around 700 so you can get a exhaust or start saving for a arms and a axle.

worry about getting the quad itself first:o

i gotta say something, why does everynody assume elkas are they way to go? there are much better shocks out there for much better prices. but anyway, tires are going to help a bunch. before you waste 500+ bucks on a full system, work on suspension first.

well if your not going to do it like seriously all the time you wouldnt need much to be competitive the think that helped me most was an 18in back tire and a gtt xc linkage also flipped the front rims and i can keep up with most of the c riders but i wouldnt recomend flipping rims

Parts you need to compete:

Running Quad

Nerfs

Tether Kill

If you are using "racing" as an excuse to get more parts for your quad, that is fine. But, a stock 450 is more than capable at an amateur event.

BTW, in this video, my quad is completely stock (including stock tires), except for a Durablue Eliminator axle, which surprisingly did not break - only bent during the race.

Every other quad had a pipe and some had fancy shocks on too.

Im gonna talk to one of my friends that races this series. although hes on a bike in the 250 b class, im sure he watches the quads so ill see what everyone else is running then ill see what i need to be competitive. and yes trx400EXtreme you do have a point that there are other options besides Elka.its pretty much personal preference. i am just kinda biased towards elka because i see them everywhere i hear all good about them. i was looking at the Works A-T Steelers and Elka Recreationals. would that be good enough for all ill be doing?

your going to need a +4 axle, 18" tires in the back, maybe 20" in the front, an buy a cheap set of elkas off ebay..... that will put you in the race!

but idk racing is not cheap its going to end up costing you 3 times that! things brake an then you got to spend money.....maybe get a 250r to save you some money so you can spend it on parts.

i think the best advice is get the quad and make it track read (nerfs, kill switch, ect) and see how you like racing. IMO why drop the money into a "race" quad if your not sure yet, lol

thats what i would do just in case you change your mind

I didn't feel like reading this whole thread, so don't hate if someone else already said this.
1. you can race a stock 450, I've been racing a stock 450r since my YFZ has been down.
2. IMO, it's a waste to go out and buy a brand new quad. Your better off buying a pro's old race or practice bike. My friend's father got Pat Browns 06 quad and it's awesome. You pay the same amount as a brand new quad, and you get a better deal. It comes with everything you'll need, and you know its been maintained if it was a pro's.
