has any one put a 250r 85-89 motor in there 400ex I have a spare fresh rebuild motor and a rolling 400ex chassis, thinking of sellling my 440x motor on ebay proubley get $1200. and building a 400ex r, any thoughts any one done this , I realize some mounts will need to be made etc, boored looking for winter project, wonder if 250r pipe will fit etc? before you guys ask nothing is for sale!!

I don't know of anyone that has done that, but I just read that service honda has plans in the works to do something just like that, stock 400EX with a 250R engine, maybe give them a call, they might be able to help you out, and I think it is a great idea to do that!

Adam Sick did it. It was in an old issue of dirtwheels. He put the yz motor, and the 250r motor in the same frame. The article was called "Chameleon 400ex".

Like you said, mounts will need to be changed. New front mounts will need to be made. As for the pipe and silencer, You will have to wait til you get the motor in to figure out what kinda pipe mounts to make. You will also need a radiator and mounts for it. Shouldnt be hard at all.

Why would you want to swap those motors? Theres alot of mods now for 400ex's

because I like 250rs better my 250r will smoke my ex anyday, and i could pocket the money for the 440 x motor as well, + just to be different!!
